Stupidly enough...

Postby happy phantom » Wed Mar 21, 2012 5:08 am

I didn't run 110 v system in the TD. Guess I didn't anticipate having electrical many places I'd go. Anyway, I'd like to run a crockpot for a few hours and I have found a 12v one but am worried it'll run the battery down. I do have a trickle charger on the battery. So, if I pull into a campsite that has electric, can I plug in the trickle charger into the battery and just leave it plugged in to run these 12v appliances? Over time, will the battery fry?

All is not lost, BUT. Any resistance heat appliance sucks major watts In the case of the Road Pro (had trouble finding any information) it is 1500 watts which figures out as 125 Amps. This would suck your battery dry in a very short time and your trickle charger would likely do very little.
Your best bet is just to use a 120VAC extension cord and perhaps power strip plugged into the pedestal. We use AC when we have it for heating water, cooking etc.
Depending on how your trailer is constructed you can add AC fairly easily.

Great advice.

We always carry an extra extension cord.
When we know we'll be somewhere with power, my wife brings the electric skillet, microwave and a couple other things she likes.
Much cheaper and easier to plug in a cord than deal with 12 volts for high draw items.

I am too used to Facebook because I keep looking for a "like" button. Anyway, I think I'll go the power strip route-don't know why I didn't think of that!

Maybe this is the "like" button?

Your site at Cooler by the Lake will be electric. Lots of us will have a plug in heat source for this event, but this may turn out to be the first time we all wish we had an airconditioner. This event is getting closer. Fairly soon I will be getting my TD out of storage and doing all the modifications I have been thinking about all winter.

Air is great...but a cheap $15.00 box fan can make a big difference in comfort.
If you have a plug in, might as well make the best of it ;)

@Gary, I think we're entering a cooling trend now. I think the weather will be closer to "normal" by then. Maybe highs in the upper 60s/low 70s if I'm guessing the trend correctly. I am looking forward to Cooler by the Lake! :)
