Recommended Converter/Charger

Postby curveball42 » Wed Jun 17, 2009 5:27 pm

Hello,

I just bought a LittleGuy 5 Wide trailer and it is already wired for 12V with a single deep cycle battery. The 12 V system runs a car stereo, a couple of lighter sockets, 3 interior lights and the fantastic vent.

I am thinking about adding shore power with a converter/charger so I can keep the battery charged over a week of camping, as well as run a coffee maker and my laptop if needed. Obviously the shore power would also run the 12 V system when connected too.... - thanks to all who posted wiring diagrams

So my question is can anyone recommend a Converter Charger to do the job? I am not familiar with makes and models or the kind of Wattage that I will need.

Also, what type of inlet is recommended? 30A? seems to be the way to go. Or can I just use a 30A adapter cable and plug in the Converter rather than hardwire it?

Thanks

Chris

As a privileged owner over the years (weeks) of both a Parallax 6730 and a WFCO 8735, I'd say go for the WFCO. Aside from the fact that my Parallax was broke and didn't work, it looked way cheesier than the pictures of it on the web. The WFCO however was the complete opposite. It looked a serious piece of hardware from the box. Big 'ol fan in the front, which meant I didn't have to worry about venting the Parallax in the rear. They're almost identical in price, except you have to spend a few bucks for AC breakers for the WFCO. Totally worth it.

I have neither but judging from the experiences of members here, I would whole heartedly recommend the WFCO.

Thanks. After further reading of this forum, and based on your suggestions it really appears like the WFCO is the way to go.

Your input is much appreciated!

Chris :) :)

Lets hope I can get her installed before my August vacation!

I too am happy with the WFCO. It is the 25 Amp model but adequate for my needs, battery charging and DC lights and outlets. I have been using it two years. The AC power draw appears to be about 4 amps at max DC output, but I seldom use the full DC capacity.
