1947 Kit Axle Seals??????

Postby SATEAR » Sat Apr 24, 2010 8:36 pm

Anyone know anything about Axle Seals, specifically about a 1947 Kit rebuild I am working on?

I took off the old what seemed to be seals and found a metal cup on the rear of the axle. No rubber residue or anything to indicate that there was any rubber there at one time.

I put the axle's together and took it our for a test run and no grease leakage to speak of.

Anyone know if these "seals" took any rubber in them or not?

Thanks,

Gabe/SATEAR

Generally the older seals had a felt material sandwiched in a metal rim....

IF it were me, I would pop out old seal to get a outside dimension of seal and then use calipers to get dimension of seal "bearing" surface on spindle and head down to a commercial gear and bearing shop and see if you can find a more "modern" version of seal and replace them.... IF you clean up old metal seal, you might find manufacturer's name and part number on them and it may be easily cross referenced to something "new"....

The seal is not so much to contain grease but to keep dirt ( abrasive out of the bearing. If you run about without a good seal; plan on numerous bearing changes

Ditto. An auto parts store is not equiped to help you based upon my recent experience. A bearing supply house will be able to find what you need (if it exists) using the dimensions of the seal and spindle.

Cheers,

Gus

When I rebuilt my '47 I checked with quite a few different bearing and seal manufacturers, and the answer was always NO - no match for the original parts. we of course used the mic'ed dimensions when searching. I even put a bearing salesman on the hunt with no success.
When I spoke to a gentleman at Kit Mfg. many years ago, he informed me that that source that most of the axle/parts came from was a WWII supplier that is no longer in business, and they made some very odd axle parts during their tenure.

I'm currently rebuilding a 46 kit and when I took my hubs off there was no seal at all. But with the diameter of the hub seal seat and the diameter of the spindle I was able to find a modern seal that works at the local parts store. It took awhile and they need to hit the old books but they found one. If you would like I could get the part number for you.

Yeah, that would be great if you could get that number to me and the parts store you went to.

Thanks,

The oil seals that I have are number 13839. I got them at the local CarMate auto parts store up here in Nebraska. Its a universal number and any good quality parts store should have them on hand or be able to order them.
There is a chance our hubs are not the same however. Mine are 5 bolt pattern and on the back say "Hadco Eng LA" and have a number W101. Not sure what any of that means, but I figure that some hubs used on the kits may be different and require different seals and bearings then I have.
Also the bearings that I have are numbers 15118 and number 09074.

Hope some of this helps, and good luck on the rebuild.

Is there a brand name on the seals and bearings that you found?
