David, it sound as if your have most of the basics covered...keep the guard in place, make sure everything is tight...if you use a cutting disk, dont try to grind with it and keep it straight into the cut...if you are getting the metal "redhot" you are working way too hard  ...oh yeah, whatchout for where the sparks are going, you can set yourself or something else on fire :D ;) ...........

And if you don't set things on fire, you can embed those nice little hot bits of dust in soft or meltable things, like any plastics nearby. Outside is best.

Tonight I used an Angle Grinder for the 1st Time

Postby Alfred » Wed Jul 30, 2008 10:38 pm

Hey Gang,

Tonight I used my new Harbor Freight Angle Grinder for the first time, to remove those ugly factory fenders from my Northern Tool trailer. Last count, I still have 10 fingers and 10 toes, and managed not to burn the place down. It was pretty fun!

Jack,

hard work is fun & stress relieving from a hard day @ the office. I use cheap grinding disks. Individually they don't last as long, but the "grind for my buck" is much better.

I agree that each type of disk has it's specified used. However I can cut with grinding discs, without ruining them. It's very hard work to do anything other score a mark in the metal. Whilst grinding using a cutting disk ruins the edge & sometimes the whole blade.

For some reason I've not ( *touchwood* ) been able to set anything alight with grinding sparks. Welding sparks YES. But with grinding I'm still looking forward to the day when it happens, albeit it at someone else's place.

I'm late to this party, but given the tools I own this is what I would do:

First, drill a couple of holes so I could get my sawzall blade in and cut the fender off as close to the frame as I could.

Then I'd take my 20 dollar 4" angle grinder and grind off what was left.
