Wheel wells on the inside

Postby Oak » Tue Aug 07, 2007 5:48 pm

If I build it 5x8 on the 4x8 trailer, how would the wheel wells affect the cabin? Would I have 2 big boxes on each side of me while sleeping? Has anyone done this and if so, do you have a picture of what it looks like with the interior finished and the bed out? Thanks!

Oak-

I built my bed on top of the wheel wells with storage underneath.

Had to go 5' high tho...

Check out my album pics.

I used Galvanized steel and raised the bed with storage underneath.

There good and weatherproof, but even with under coating they sound like a "Brass Band" going down the road.

But doesn't it get in the way? I mean, leg room would be cut down by at least 6 inches on each side, right? I don't want to have to raise my sleeping area. Or is it barely noticeable?

Oak-

Regretably you will lose width around wheel wells if you don't build with your bed on top.

But you could always make use of that area by adding storage cabinets the same depth as the wheel wells?

I'm building around wheel wells but I dont have the full depth of the wheel in the trailer, I want my trailer to have the same track or close to that of my Jeep. I will have 5' wide at the shoulders and 4' wide below the knees. I dont really see this as a problem but I will keep the wheel wells as low as possible to try and make them unobtrusive.

Here's a shot of my frame so you can see why I have wheel wells and the size of them.

I'm building a 5'x8' on a 4'x8' HF frame (12" wheels). The wheel wells only extend up into the cabin by about 2.5"...that plus the thickness of the floor/supports gives 4.5" of clearance to the tires (factory fender clearance is 3.5" on the trailer I have). I'm using an 8" foam mattress, so I just cut a shallow piece out of the bottom of the mattress over the wheel wells...the mattress lays perfectly flat wall to wall and you can't even tell the wheel wells are there.

I don't have a current interior pic, but here are a couple of construction pics showing the wheel wells:

I built a platform over my wheelwells. It is 9" deep so to keep the 4' height inside my TD is 4'9" high. This also gives me a huge basement, 5'x8'x9".

[/img] If you plane out wooden cross joist to fly just over the steel fenders and apply your floor you will eliminate this problem. Should take a 2x6 ripped to 4" maybe a little less.

There is a 2 1/2" square tube frame laying in the axle cradel of a HF folding trailer. If I had raised it 1 1/2' more I would have had a flat floor and that is leaving the steel fenders to help protect the wood. However under the matress they are still undetectable. I am contemplating 2 layers of 3/4" foam and a 7/16 osb floor to flatten it out. I have 5'6" inside now so we wouldn't miss the 2"

Sorry for the really delayed reply. Thanks for your input and help. It's not as bad as I thought it would be. And besides, unless I want to build the floor really tall, thus compromising stability, I have no choice do I? I can live with a few inches of space gone. Thanks again!!!

If I were building 5 by 8 on a 4 by 8 platform, I would extend the axle 6 inches (by cutting it in half in the middle and welding in a 6 inch section) and then go with the wheel wells half inside and half outside. That would reduce the width of your inside wheelwells to only 3 inches or so and give you narrow outside fenders, more in keeping with the 'teardrop look'

I'm custom building my frame and that's exactly what I'm doing. I'm building a close copy of the Grumman 2 (drawings found on this site) which has the wheelwells half inside and half outside - Looks very traditional (one of the nicest looking teardrop designs I've ever seen) and the loss of interior space is so small as to not even be a factor

Something to think about . . . . .
