I'm wondering if this traailer would be adequate for a 5x8 tear...

Why use the half torsion axle? I think that overcomplicates things. You may want to design with a standard torsion.

You should definitely change the main drawbar from C-channel to box-type tubing. The extra side on the tube will add a ton of rigidity.

I see a major problem with using 3mm C channel mounted to the half-torsion axles. That C-channel will warp, and your axles will tip. If you can use a full axle, the C-channel will work fine.

If I were you, I would:
a) swap the two half axles for a full torsion axle, spanning across the whole trailer. Weld that, and you can eliminate the crossbeam that is there anyways.
b) replace the center drawbar with square tubing
c) extend the center drawbar back, to where it would intersect the axle. Weld it there, and you'll be fine.
