Dexter brakes

Postby synaps3 » Fri Mar 12, 2010 12:07 pm

The frame I have procured for my build has a Dexter torsion axle, with a 4-bolt pattern backplate for brakes.

I have no idea what model the axle is though. I'd like to put brakes on it, because my tow vehicle is a lightweight.

I think these are what I need: http://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Brakes/ ... 23-27.html

What else do I need? :)

What you need!

Usually axles w/o brakes have just hubs, not brake drums. So in addition to the brake shoe assembly you'll need drums to match. Brake hubs usually come with the outer bearings pressed in and you can use the cones and inner races from your existing hubs. Then you'll need to make sure you have a battery in your teardrop and a breakaway switch to connect the battery to the brakes in the event your trailer and tv become separated. Finally you'll need a brake controller installed in your tv to control the trailer brakes. Then it's easy bolt on/wire in installation.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Gus

I retro fitted brakes on my first Dexter torsion axle and spent around $400.00.
A new axle with brakes ( about $80 extra) cost me about $450.00 including tax.
I'd make sure you have all the parts and prices listed before you make the dive for brakes.
You'll also need a brake controller, break away switch and maybe a break away switch battery if you don't have a way to charge your teardrop battery while traveling.
If you have the side mounts you may be able to remove the axle and sell it and buy a new one outfitted with brakes. :D Danny
