HF wheel bearings and seals

Postby LDK » Sun May 02, 2010 8:51 pm

I was wondering, does harbor freight have replacement wheel bearings and seals for their trailers?? I wanted to get an extra set for my 1700lb# 94564 trailer..

Harbor Freight may have them in stock, you can probably get them at Walmart too. If you have them out a good old fashioned auto parts store can sell you better quality bearings.

Check this thread for part number on bearing and the metric size of the seal.

I got in a situation that was of my own doing. I had gotten distracted while changing a tire and failed to tighten the lug nuts completely. I had tightened them as possible while in the air but forgot to torque them down after I sat the weight of the trailer back on the ground. After about 70 miles something just didn't seem right. A walk around inspection showed 3 of 4 lug nuts misssing 2 lug bolts had taken such a beating they had been driven out of the hub and were gone. There I sat. 1/2 block away was a mom and pop farm store. I went in and explained my dilema and low and behold they pulled from under the counter a matching hub complete with all bearing , lug nuts and even a new dust cap. On my way out I picked up a 1 lb tub of good grade wheel bearing grease.Total cost $26.00 and change.

Mine you now and think a moment. My bearings were fine ( I have 8,000 miles on my little HF axle and have never had the 1st bearing problem) but with a beat to hell hub I was going no where. Pulled the cap removed the cotter pin removed the castle nut. Packed the new bearings and reused the rear seal from the old hub and reassembled everything and was back on the road.

I later pulled in new studs on the old hub and now carry it as a spare ready to go in a plactic bag in a small cloth tool pouch. In event of a problem I could slip off the , in use hub and slip on my reserve hub. The complete assembly is ready to slide on with all bearings prepacked and ready. I placed 2 pieces of heavy tape over the back and front to keep the grease contaminate free. A lot less messy and a lot more convenient than packing bearings by the side of the road.

P.S. Remember bearings and races are a matched item to do the job properly you need to drive out the races from the hub and reinstall the new races in the hub that are matched to the bearings they came with.
A complete ready to slide on hub is starting to make a lot more sense isn't it .

I may try to get the whole hub assembly for a spare. I wonder if harbor freight sells them that way? It's a 5 lug hub. I also bought a leslie bearing packer and plan on packing the bearings before using the trailer. I heard that the inner seal can get chewed up trying to take it out so I'll definately have to find some replacement seals.

here we go again.... bearings are std. buy them at your local bearing supply store. I got the bearing no. off the bearing, took the seal, went to the bearing store and got two sets.... The bearing part no. is stamped into the end of the bearing, easily seen.

If you don't want the trouble of changing a bearing on the road, buy a hub.

If you don't want to have to ever change a bearing, keep it maintained and it will go at least 100k miles... don't over tighten it..

For those of you who have never seen a bearing take it apart and look at it. It is not magic... and the hub does NOT have to be full of grease.

repack the bearing using your hand, put some grease around the outside of the bearing and reinstall it.... if you use a pair of pliers to tighten the nut, you have over tightened it.. put it on, finger tighten the nut, spin the hub a few times and finger tighten it and line up the cotter pin hole by BACKING OFF the nut, not by making it tighter, that will squeeze the grease off the outside of the bearing.

The two main enemies of bearings are over tightening and water.

Everyone can say what they want about standard bearing sizes and availability of grease seals, but, if you have one of the HF trailers, I would make sure to have the extra parts on hand before you need them. I know everyone's experience is different, but I guarantee you that they are not easy to find in my neck of the woods. The grease seals were especially difficult to get my hands on. This link is posted earlier in this thread, but, here it is again. http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=30022&highlight=

I hope it helps.

The reason why I said to take the seal in is that there are similar seals with same id/od, but not width... If you take in the seal, they can match it up or measure it....

I do live near Hartford, CT, so finding a supply store was fairly simple (yellow pages). And, if they carry the bearings, which have the number etched on them, they should have the seals.

Re: HF wheel bearings and seals

Postby Mrcloud » Wed Mar 14, 2012 9:46 am

Hello, I'm sorry for bumping an old thread. I would like to have a complete hub to install in case of an emergency on the side of the road. I am new to trailers and I need 94564 to tow a motorcycle from NY to FL. When I call HF should I order

1- part 18 hub
1 or 2- part 20 bearing
1- part 21 dust cap
1- part 31 - grease fitting
1 - part 99? - grease seal

I plan to get the trailer today and get everything put together except the tire/hub section found on page 11. From what I was reading I should get brake cleaner and clean all those parts (execpt the tire of course) then grease them with a high quality (marine?) grease. Can I pack the bearing by hand or do I need a bearing packer?

Fill the Dust Caps (21) with bearing grease. Then, press each Dust Cap onto the Hubs (18). (See Figure G.)

So I just fill the cap to the rim grease?

Grease each Grease Fitting (31) located on the backside of each Hub (18).

I have no idea what that part is going to look like. Is it just a washer that I slather in grease?

Sorry for the dumb questions, any help is much appreciated.
