New Guy Intro

Postby jarrell » Wed Dec 04, 2013 10:44 pm

Name: Jarrell
Age: 45
Live in: Olathe KS
Family: Married 15 years, wife's a teacher. Two daughters 14 and 10
Work: Currently management, mold maker, CNC programmer operator, Prior 18 years interior trim and cabinets. 8 years Army
Hobbies: To many to list but main ones have been cycling, brewing, wood working, camping, kites and photography.

OK, that was stiff enough and that's not usually me :o Anyway I'm in process of deciding what to build. Want to build a TD to off set the cost of going to cycling events that I attend with a nephew who will be building this with me he's a welder, mechanic and all around get it done kinda guy. I also plan to take my wife and girls camping...I'll take the tent and let them have the Tear!
Really excited to see how much of the work I can do on my 5 x 10 CNC machine at work. It might be cheating by some standards I don't know, but I'm betting if more people had access plenty tears would be built with there use.
I have some rough ideas but there in the infant stage...Mainly pics, and sketches. Caught the bug when I saw a flat bed hauling Lil Guy Trailers on he highway probably 5 years ago, minds been working ever since. Wife doesn't know about my new hobby  Figure I've built a heck of a lot of stuff for her over the years now I'll build something for me/us!

Welcome to the madness. I don't think that using your best tools and skills is cheating, though my Grandad admitted that he was sure his Dad wouldn't approve of using powered drills and saws.... I feel I am a pioneer of sorts, as I routinely use the wrong tools for the wrong jobs, sorta cheating but I make them work for me. If I had a lathe or mill or CNC, then I'd...probably use them wrongly too. Also, my trailer was built for the wife (my cover story, and I'm sticking to it), but really for me. Enjoy your build!

Welcome to the forum Jarrell. Name's Gary and we live about as far northeast of downtown as you live southwest accept Rayville is out in the sticks. The city runs out alot faster this direction. Good luck on your build sounds like you have the skills and there is a lot of good ideas here. Hope to see you out camping next spring.

Hey, Jarrod.

Welcome to the forum! It's good to know more about you.

You've already found my CNC build thread, and I can see you will be a useful resource for helping me find my way around some problems and challenges.

It's good to know we have someone with current knowledge in the field. I'll be interested in seeing your take on what role CNC can have in teardrop design and building.

Once again, welcome!
I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.

Thanks for the welcomes, I've been careening over information like am addict already...Good stuff, makes for great dreams LITERALLY

Vedett, funny you just replied as I was going to type in response to CaptnTelescope saying he wants to see what my take will be with the CNC...I'm going to see how little I can use a jig saw if at all. I do agree that building needs to start before spring but you rush a good thing to much and you end up wishing you took time and planned a little longer.

Gary, first guy in the metro area I'v made contact with...Thanks! yes the town can spread out a little. Hope you have some pics posted. Definitely want to be ready for spring.

bc toys...Ya, I would make it big enough for all 4 of us but honestly that IMO would take away from the nostalgia of trying to stay small. I guess to me it goes hand in hand with building rather than buying. I'm sure I'll end up building to big for some and ya to little for others. hoping to hit the sweet spot for my personal needs.

Working on it... Kinda like having squares when you need circles, just make it work end result rules!

Welcome Jarrell.

Here a few TD owners in Kansas. Someone joined earlier this year from Olathe, Kansas, there one in Topeka, two in KC and 3 in wichita that built or are building TD, and probably more I can’t remember.

There are some nice tents these day that open up so you can attach them to truck beds or other camper. Lot of TD users use them as an extra living room or sleeping area for kids. Nice to have if you have kids.

GL in whatever you choice to build. Most of all just have fun doing it.
