Hello All, from Houston TX

Postby dperry324 » Fri Aug 08, 2014 1:44 pm

I've been lurking and reading post after post after post, but I decided it was finally time for me to introduce myself.

My name is Darryl, and I'm currently living in the suburbs of Houston, TX.

My family and I are from northern California, and we are doing time in the swampland of Texas. Before we moved out here, we used to do tent camping at many of the local lakes and parks. Tent camping in the summertime was never an issue because the heat of the day would dissipate by evening and it would we comfortably cool for sleeping. Conversely, all the camping areas within a few hours of Houston are all going to be hot and muggy all night long. This makes tent camping pretty unbearable during the summer.

So I didn't have to work hard to convince my wife to let me try my hand at building a tiny trailer. The expectation is that we can have a sleeper that would have A/C and keep us comfortable at night.

Since this is going to be my first TD, I'm not going to try anything extravagant. The Harbor Freight trailer at the bottom of the Design page is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. The only two requirements my wife gave to me were that it had to fit a least a double/full mattress for the both of us, and that it had to have A/C. Beyond that, I expect I will go with a wood exterior, 12v DC fittings, and minimalist galley fixtures.

I know I want A/C, and I've looked around at what others have done here, but I have a few questions. 1) The smallest A/C unit I've seen is the 5000 BTU 120+V range. That size of unit seems WAY overpowered for such a tiny space. Is there such a thing as a 1000 BTU or less DC unit? If not, has anybody ever made one?

I've got many of the tools needed to make a TD, as I've dabbled in some woodworking before, so I feel that I'm in a good place for building something of this size.

Anyways, I'll be asking some more questions later, so be on the lookout :)
Regards,
Darryl

Hi Darryl.
Welcome. Looks like you are almost there. You have the tools and the wife is on side, you should be finished in no time. Apart from the A/c, it sounds like your requirements are much the same as ours were. A proper innersprung mattress was a must, the galley with just a portable cooker and a plastic bowl for washing dishes.
Hope all goes well on your project.
Sheddie.

It's amazing how fluid the requirements are for my build project. After discussing the pros and cons of several various features, some things begin to gel even more.

After considering the options between a 4x8 and a 5x8, we decided that it would be best (and cheaper) to go with a 4x8 frame. This precludes the option for having a full/double mattress. We've decided at this point that we can make due with a cut piece of foam or a good quality air bed. We also decided that this project of ours will be a simple sleeper TD, with no galley. We will still be including the AC tho, and I think I'll just go with the flow and do what everybody else does and use the 5000 btu wall-mounted frigidaire, with an extension cord.

The one thing we would like to incorporate is maybe some sort of skylite, or even a large back window, since we won't be having to deal with a galley. It would be nice to look up at the sky while drifting off to sleep.

The only other things I can see us needing is maybe an extra rack on top to tow our kayaks.

Also, it turns out that a service vendor fellow at work is also interested in TD camping. He gave me a link to a site close to me that rents out TD trailers. My wife and I think we might be taking a weekend away with one of those rentals, to test how well we can manage it. It would give us a real feel for it before we attempt to build one of our own.
Regards,
Darryl

Hey Darryl!
I thinking over many of the same questions. I'm also relatively nearby.
Good luck and keep us posted.
Just starting out! Wish me luck!
