My name is Darryl, and I'm currently living in the suburbs of Houston, TX.
My family and I are from northern California, and we are doing time in the swampland of Texas. Before we moved out here, we used to do tent camping at many of the local lakes and parks. Tent camping in the summertime was never an issue because the heat of the day would dissipate by evening and it would we comfortably cool for sleeping. Conversely, all the camping areas within a few hours of Houston are all going to be hot and muggy all night long. This makes tent camping pretty unbearable during the summer.
So I didn't have to work hard to convince my wife to let me try my hand at building a tiny trailer. The expectation is that we can have a sleeper that would have A/C and keep us comfortable at night.
Since this is going to be my first TD, I'm not going to try anything extravagant. The Harbor Freight trailer at the bottom of the Design page is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. The only two requirements my wife gave to me were that it had to fit a least a double/full mattress for the both of us, and that it had to have A/C. Beyond that, I expect I will go with a wood exterior, 12v DC fittings, and minimalist galley fixtures.
I know I want A/C, and I've looked around at what others have done here, but I have a few questions. 1) The smallest A/C unit I've seen is the 5000 BTU 120+V range. That size of unit seems WAY overpowered for such a tiny space. Is there such a thing as a 1000 BTU or less DC unit? If not, has anybody ever made one?
I've got many of the tools needed to make a TD, as I've dabbled in some woodworking before, so I feel that I'm in a good place for building something of this size.
Anyways, I'll be asking some more questions later, so be on the lookout
