Teardrop Newbie from CA

Postby DonnaZ » Wed Aug 31, 2011 7:01 pm

Hi - I'm from Thousand Oaks CA. My husband and I were tent campers. Then we got into RV'ing when we had babies. Now the kids are just about all grown up & we have scaled down to a teardrop. My husband has a bad neck/spine, so I really love the ease of towing the teardrop - as well as the ability to sleep off the ground. We have a Little Guy 5-wide with the hatch (doesn't have the lower compartment), and have so far taken it out twice. We're working on building in a galley. I've been lurking here and reading posts all summer to get ideas. I just ordered a Suburban 2-burner cook-top. I'm thinking about a little oval sink that I saw on E-bay; and I'm thinking about saving for a bigger purchase of the ClimateRight AC&Heating unit. My husband loves astronomy so winter camping sometimes happens. I'm also thinking about some sort of awning system to protect from rain/sun. I like the Paha Que-Paha Que Cottonwood Shade Shelter. I also like the shade room that attaches to the teardrop but it's almost $600! I'd rather get the AC/Heater unit. I've been able to find threads on stoves and awnings but haven't found any on the ClimateRight. If anyone can point me in that direction or if you have any other advice, I would greatly appreciate it! Glad to be here! :)

Are you planning on taking your completed TD up to Mt. Pinos?
It would be a good place to get in and warm up. Or even wait and
drive home in the morning.
I'm waiting to go after I get my mirror redone.
Steve
Building the TD was the best thing I ever made.

Welcome Donna. Did we camp across from you at El Capitan a couple weeks ago?

@Thawley - probably! We were at El Capitan a few weeks ago - moved around quite a bit because of the reservations issues there. We talked to a lot of people since the teardrop was quite a hit. We were in campsite 26, then 45, then 53. Where was your site?

@Senior Ninja - Mt. Pinos is a great idea! We used to frequent it on new moon weekend for astronomy, but haven't gone in years.

We were the people in 46 with the ginormous 5th wheel trailer. It was that trip that rekindled my teardrop flame and got me thinking about building another one. Here's the story of our first.

Nice meeting you. Thanks again to your daughter for moving your car several times to help us get the 5th wheel parked. (Wasn't my trailer – and I'm now convinced I don't want one either...)

Hello California, DonnaZ. Welcome to the board and good for you, getting off of the ground and injoying life in your Little Guy. If you ever venture south down the I-15, and are 25 miles south of I-91, just swing on by and we'll talk teardrops. The coffee is always on. I do hope you will make plans to attend the Perris Lake Gathering, which will have upwards of 120 TD trailers. It's an event you won't forget.

Hi John - Yes, I remember talking to you - it was great to meet you and learn more about teardrops. Loved reading your story! I, too, am happy to be in the teardrop. Hauling and backing in the big trailer was pretty stressful. During this last beach trip, I really enjoyed the freedom of the teardrop - it was most especially easy to move between all those sites!

Hi Roly - Thanks so much for the warm welcome! Really enjoyed the pictures of your build. The galley is AMAZING!
