Hi Guys and Gals, I'm new here from Lubbock TX

Postby Richard Miller » Sat Jan 14, 2012 1:03 am

Hi, my names Richard and I've been checking out the T&TTT forum for quite awhile. that's a good thing and a bad thing !

When I first started lurking here I had purchased plans for a simple 4x8 DesertTear, TD trailer and if i started building from the plans then I might be finsihed by now, but you guys had to post all the cool build pics. and now my plans change almost by the hour.

I'm planning on building a 4x10 along the lines of the Modernistic / Cub profile but with a little different front similar to DMcCams Atma Travelear, and hints from Tom Aggie's trailer also .

No pictures yet but I've started the frame with 2" square 11 guage tubing and a Dexter torqueflex axle.

I'll give up some comfort with the 4' wide low profile, because I'll be towing it behind my 55 t-bird hotrod and I want to keep it small to see around and with as little wind drag as possible.

I've probably got a million questions but I'll ask them later to keep the intro short.

Oh yeah, I'm a locomotive engineer with bnsf railroad and i'm an old fart.... please don't hold that against me.

Richard

8) Old farts often have wisdom and sage advice to give, and being an engineer helps too. That is an occupation that has always intrigued me.
Also, a 55 t-bird tow vehicle....AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! I love 'em so much.

Sounds like you have broken ground, and we always welcome dem pictures. Especially nice to see a picture of the hotrod if you don't have one of the frame yet.

HMMMM, an old fart with a 55 Bird sounds like a pretty good addition to the madness. Welcome from another Texan. :)

Hey Richard, welcome from just up the road in Plainview.. There are a few more of us in Amarillo also. I have a four wide store bought trailer, gets a bit cozy when you have a guest over, but works out fine. Look forward to meeting you. Ronnie

Hi Cliff,
You KNOW why I'm building the teardrop,
It's so flat around here you have to travel a pretty good distance to see any kind of scenery. It's not like I live in Georgia or California or Reno or down by the Gulf( Hi Sandy).......ok, I think Rockinrobin / Ronnie can sympathize with me, but I'm planning on traveling and seeing some of this great country when I retire.

Hi Dave, you and Tom/Aggie79 are the guys that have put me the spot I'm in now, I was ok to just build a simple little teardrop to drag around to car shows and long distance cruises, but since I've seen the light, I WANT MORE ! the only thing I would really be worried about if I were you is all the attention it will draw, I'm pretty sure I couldn't handle the crowds.

I'll have to admit though that hanging around this forum has made me want to get out and try some of these teardrop gatherings and meet the nice people that seem to hang out here.

Ronnie, I checked out your album and it looks like the Palo Duro Canyon camping would be alot of fun, is that something the Amarillo/ area guys do very often?
I've tried to get my wife interested in the idea of doing a little traveling/ camping with the TD but she hasn't warmed to it too much yet, maybe when the trailer starts coming together or a short camping trip to PaloDuro might change her mind.

Hey Richard! I graduated from Tech back in 84 and my son graduated 2 years ago. He stayed there and is now a Lubbock Policeman. We come up and visit him several times a year so I look forward to meeting you!

Cool car! I just sold my 29 Ford roadster hyboy...I would love to go for a trip around the block with you when we get to meet up.

Howdy, neighbor.
You drive *that* T-Bird, and you're worried a TD will draw crowds?

Welcome to the madness.
It is worth, no matter what you eventually build, your time & effort to get hold of the plans that Steve published for the Little Diner trailers he built (one for himself, one for MikeS), and read and study those before you go beyond the welding-a-frame stage.
Truly.

Go BNSF!

Hey Richard,
The Palo Duro camp out was switched to Caprock Canyons for this last Summer. Somehow
we picked the hottest
weekend of an unseasonably hot summer. ( it was no ones fault as theses things are planned out way ahead of time, and it should have been pleasant) It was 112 Friday and 115 Saturday! Anyway get your trailer finished and we will see how many we can get together to break it in! Ronnie :applause:

Hi again.

Laredo, I don't know who this - Steve and MikeS is that you speak of ?
Where can I find the plans for the LittleDiner trailer?
Are you from here in the Lubbock area?

Hi Art, thanks for the welcome. I do plan on going down in your neck of the woods some day, maybe we'll cross paths at some teardrop gathering. I try to go to Austin every spring for the LoneStar Roundup and that is one of the reasons i got the urge to build a TD in the first place, it's a great show around the first of april each year. Check it out !

Hi Kathy, thanks or the compliment on the t-bird I haven't decided what kind of finish i'll have on the trailer, i like the aluminum but I might consider doing a vinyl wrap in flames that match the car, then I'd be able to unwrap it if i didn't like it..... has anyone done a wrap on their trailer before?

Ronnie, is there a local chapter of tear droppers around here, how are these gatherings organized?
Where is caprock canyons anyway?

I don't think anyone will forget how hot it was in the summer of 2011, it burned up several miles or railroad right-of-way I think we replaced around 80-90,000 ties that were burned up.
I used to be pretty indecisive, but now I'm not too sure
