Hello from Milwaukee, WI...

Hello out there!

I've been watching/researching the board for several weeks now and thought I should (finally!) say hi. I'm continually amazed at all of the different designs out there, and, more importantly, the amount of help everyone gives here. Simply amazing!

I got a trailer (5' 4" x 8') about ten days ago, and have been working on a design since. Well, that's not exactly true. I was leaning towards the Weekender before even getting it, or something relatively simple to construct. Once I got the trailer and sat on it, hooked it up to the tow vehicle (Jeep), hit the graph paper & Photoshop, the plans have been evolving.

Here's what she looks like:

Funny thing happened to me on Saturday. I went to purchase most of the supplies and got rear-ended before I could even get to the hardware store. No damage to me, but the van behind me can't say so. We were waiting for the light to change to and, all of a sudden, the van which was stopped behind me, decided to hit/ram the trailer. Not sure why, but anyway the trailer has large tie-down eyelets on the back of the frame which acted like a bumper (you can see them in the second photo). The right-most one got pretty bent but the van behind me got quite a dent. I guess I learned before investing all the time & $$$ into it that I should put some kind of a bumper on there before the maiden voyage.

Here's the bent-in eyelet:

Well, that's probably enough for my first message. Hello everybody!

:)

Welcome,

Looks like you got poked in the eye(bolt) right off the start. At least you got it over with. Looks like you have a sturdy foundation to build on

Welcome to this friendly and helpful place. Nice to see another Wisconsinite. We're in Whitewater, but there are a couple of newer members closer to you.

And hi back to you -- thanks for the welcome!

Steve: Yeah, I was looking for a "solid" trailer to start with, one that I didn't have to (completely) build. I took the motorcycle chocks off. Will hopefully be able to tar the underside this weekend. Another nice thing is that it is 5' 4" wide, so I'll have room for the walls & a queen size bed.

Greg: I've seen your build, glad to see you are finished. Good for you!!! Maybe I can take a look at it sometime, before I get too far along with mine. I saw your mattress photos, too -- ours just arrived at the back door today. (A little ahead of myself in getting it but wanted to make sure I have it when ready.) We did a similar thing and got ours off of eBay. Amazing how they can smash up a bed (mattress) and how it can seemingly "inflate."

Pat: I've noticed some of the newer members, too. Nice to know I'm not the only crazy one around here.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin (not Milwaukie, Oregon). I put that in my profile now.

Thanks!

I think I have a general overhead view...

Conceptually, I'm happy with where I'm at. Construction-wise, I'm aiming to begin this weekend. Thought I'd have started tarring the underside by now. While I know life gets in the way, and will continue to do so, I never thought (in a million years!) that I'd have to use the dehumidifier in the garage. It has been so humid here that the floor is sweating profusely.

Hey Kevin, welcome from another newbie. I think I saw that trailer go by on craigslist last week. I am spitting my time between Kenosha and Menomonee Falls. I've been looking for a cheap and solid trailer and realizing I won't find both. Will need to increase my price range a bit to avoid getting in over my head. The guy who was honest enough to tell me he had a bent axle made me realize there will be others who won't...

Hi Ladies!

Karina: Yeah, you gotta have a solid foundation to build your house.

Ageless: Thanks, I keep reminding myself of that. I'm sure everyone has neighbors that lie down on a flatbed trailer to imagine comfort levels. I'll spare you those pictures though. :applause:
