Greetings from Tampa

Postby DKD » Wed Sep 28, 2011 6:26 pm

I have been camping regularly for nearly 30 years and had never heard of a teardrop trailer until about 1 week ago when researching the possibility of a small travel trailer for a cross-country trip. I stumbled across a website for teardrop trailers, and have been spending all my free time (as well as a lot of time when I should be doing other things) searching for more info on these neat little trailers. The wife is even on board, and despite all my other projects she gave me the the OK to build one this winter.

The trailer is going to be slightly on the larger side, as far as teardrops go, as it needs to sleep me, my wife, and 2 dogs (both about 50#). Right now we are planning for a trailer that is 10' long by 5' wide. The main sleeping cabin will be about 8' long, to include a space under the cabinets for the dogs.

While not truly classic designs, I am really drawn to trailers with a rounded front similar to the Camp-Inn Raindrop 560 and the Airstream Basecamp. I have been sketching up ideas all day. I can't wait to get started building. I am sure it will be quite an adventure.

Welcome! I just started posting here the last few weeks and it's an amazing place to learn about these trailers and meet some pretty chill people. The amount of knowledge for these trailers on this forum is mind numbing!

Here is a homebuilt round nose trailer by Glen Wallin.

If you click on the hall of fame above you will find his woodie roundnose at the end of row 12 or 13.

He has built 4 or 5 for sale.

Hey, DKD.
I just posted first time today but have been tear-dropping for a few years now in one I built. We even have a/c and satellite TV. Let me know if I can offer any useful suggestions.
Happy trails,
Hoyt

Hi DKD! Another Tampa person here. I sold my Teardrop almost 2 years ago and sure do miss her. It was a 5x10 with 2 doors...plenty of room for me. But I've got a 1977 Serro Scotty now and am enjoying standing up for a change.

We are having a campout at Manatee Springs October 28-30 and there will be 4-5 Teardrops there along with some vintage trailers. If you would like to come and join us, please do. If you don't want to camp and would prefer to come for the day you are more than welcome.

You will enjoy this site. The people are great and loads of good information! Welcome aboard!

Hi DKD,

I've built mine at home in Europe. looks like a liitle T@B. Are you looking for something like this? Look at my album. Its also 10'x 5'. The beds are a little higher situated then the floor, so that should be a nice area for your dogs

Thanks to Google translate? Or are you Dutch?

Dutch ancestry. Van Hoose(Heusen) family.

Not Google Translate.

I found what I needed in the textbook: Essential Dutch Grammar written by Henry R. Stern

I should have added to "huis" the phrase "op de schijven", no?
Happy trails,
Hoyt

With this you wrote: This is the most beatyfull house. What do you mean by that?

And the family Van Heusen was out of The Netherlands? Must be long time ago. And none of your family speaks any Dutch at all? Good intregation.

I was trying in poor Dutch to compliment you, that your trailer(a little house on wheels) is beautifully made.
The Van Heusen's are here since the City of New York was known as New Amsterdam.
Many decades ago the ones in Appalachia shortened the name to Van Hoose, which was my grandmother's maiden name.
Sorry if I hi-jacked this thread. Back to welcoming the newbie now.
Happy trails,
Hoyt
