Cargo trailer aftermarket tires and wheels

Postby piperpilot3tk » Thu Mar 13, 2014 8:57 pm

Now that I am getting close to finishing my CT conversion it is time to buy some new tires. I am looking to go with larger diameter and wider tires since the small stock 205/75/15 pizza cutters mounted on 5" wide wheels look silly due to my 5" suspension lift. I tried to fit a spare 15" wheel with 30x9.50x15 tire from a Jeep on the trailer this afternoon, and while the tire size looks about perfect, the wheel had too much positive offset which would not give clearance between the tire and the trailer.

Have any of you run 15"x8" wheels on your cargo trailers? If so what is the offset and or back spacing?

piperpilot3tk, Howdy;

Dexter Axel has some great info. on their website. Here's a link to a page
about selecting replacement wheels.
http://www.dexteraxle.com/i/u/6149609/f ... _Tires.pdf
There is another that shows the different off-sets (scroll down to second page) types for wheels;

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the links Hank. I did some measuring today and found that the factory wheels have 3" back spacing. I looked at lots of specs on aftermarket steel wheels and the minimum back spacing available in a wheel that is rated for sufficient load is 4" which will fit just fine. I ended up ordering some Cragar Soft 8 wheels in 16"x7" since I have a used set of 245/75/16 Goodyear Wranglar MTR tires sitting around. The powder coated black wheels with big mud tires should look pretty cool on my lifted black 6x12 trailer!

Yeah well I am sure it will corner at least as good as my turbo diesel Dodge. I will post pictures after I get them installed sometime next week.
