6x12 toy hauler.

Postby FR CTC » Sun Apr 20, 2025 8:31 pm

After a few moths of debating and thinking I found a 6x12 that was done and 90% of what I wanted. Price was fair and at worst it was the cost of materials and the labor was free.
The inside was insulated and had white paneling, lights, propane heaters and a solar system. Here is the dealerships photo.

Nice! So you have plans to add more amenities, or just going to throw in a cot and call it done.

Here is what I wanted to haul in it. A motorcycle and a paramotor, plus have a bed and the bare minimums with me. As you see a 12x6 is barely enough for this. And will take some creative compromises.

After trying cots, small mattresses I realized as a larger dude I’m not compromising on sleep. So I decided on a twin mattress sized Murphy bed. Here I decided to go tall and place the platform about 24” up. Which makes a tiny shelf space above. I sized it for about an 9” mattress which means a 7” ikea foam mattress and a blanket or two.

If I do this again I will build the Murphy bed to be one unit. The build in place is tedious.

The bed as it stands. It leaves just enough room for the Paramotor on the same wall. The motorcycle part is in planning.

Due to some wrong assumptions I put the bed a bit further and should have pushed it forward a few more inches. Oh well next time.

While I wanted to not do much more I realized that I need to have a place for basics that will live in the trailer. A place for shoes, toiletries, some food. So I want to add a cubby up front that will be flush with the door and will serve as a support for the bed in front. The previous owner put the batteries under the trailer behind the axle. Not sure of that reasoning, and I don’t think I like it. Maybe they wanted a cooler place for the batteries? Regardless I think they will be moved to the bench cubby or in one of the pockets under the bed. Still need to think on the water. I’d like a roof vent and maybe another egress window on the left side.

For now I think I want to use it and build and explore the world a bit. Once again this year looks busy but I will make time.

flboy: I’m plotting on how to get the motorcycle placed. I have literally the same winch you have. For now I can try to get the bike in forward to just use the trailer. But the bike needs to go in backwards if I want to do longer runs where I want to sleep at a gas station without taking out the bike. I can always unstrap it and get it to the side. This is where your setup with the smaller bed shines.

Paramotor.. Wow. How long have you been flying them. Did you get formal training or via a club? I want to get a paramotor (I am 61) , but my wife and adult Children are so against it. They figure I'll kill myself, but I am willing to risk it.. I think it is perfectly safe if you are trained properly and are very selective on weather. What do you think?

BTW.. love the trailer setup.

So wrt Paramotoring. I say go take a discovery flight on a trike and see how you like it. If you do like it then you have the option pursue to foot launch or trike launch. Foot launch will require you to carry the engine and the setup is roughly 60lb. It’s not as bad as it sounds as long as you have good technique you only carry it for a bit. But you will need to be in decent shape. Judging by your bike riding it should be fine. With a trike you will want your trailer to haul the gear. There is some packable setups that fit in a truck or suv. So that works too. As for your age, I know a gentleman that will foot launch in TX on the beach but only trike launches in CO, and he is 71. CO has low air density so it hurts you multiple ways. At your age go to a school and get good training. Also if the FL in your name stands for Florida you can probably fly at the beach somewhere. Then as long as you have a good onshore wind launching is easy. Get a good modern wing with plenty of weight margin too. For older guys an easy wing is great, not super fast but who cares.
I’ve been flying for about 3 years and a bit over 110 hours. I’m in my “early” 50s. A bit on the chunky side but in good shape compared to a lot of others. It’s a blast. Has its challenges for sure. But you got to see the world from up high. Or you can pretend your are on a dirt bike and hug the ground, except you can do that over a farmers field that is off limits to your motorcycle.
