Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Postby parnold » Sun May 16, 2010 9:36 pm

I have two of the memory foam mattresses, one I sleep on every night, and one in my tear. After years of waking up with a backache, I decided to try the memory foam about a year ago.

Best money I ever spent!

Let ya know how it feels when I get it.

I want to know if you bottom it out when on our side.

Yep a little bit. So you may want to go a little thicker or just add another inch of the firm stuff. But overall a nice bed. Too bad I have to buy another one, looks like this one is never coming off our bed in the house

Engineer Guy :

The couch / full size bed worked great for the barn build. When solo camping I don't bother to convert it to a bed I just sleep on the couch with all kinds of room. I used the tubular frame from a steel futon frame and made support stands for the frame halves. Converts in about 3 minutes from couch to full size bed. I need to drag all the parts out of the trailer and get some good pictures of the unit. It works real well and affords a lot of under couch/bed storage. It is also easily removed and stores elsewhere knocked down to allow the trailer to be used to haul items if needed.

A Sharp Bed Config

Postby Engineer Guy » Mon May 17, 2010 9:34 am

Bobhenry ~

Great minds think alike and so do you and I! A very nice and solid bed/couch install you did there, and the storage underneath looks super. Thanks for giving me some pix to reference. Nice that you can remove components and still haul stuff as well. This Forum has given me lots of ideas and inspiration, and I hope to provide some payback over the years.

How wide is the trailer box wall to wall inside ?

How wide is the 4 wheeler ?

I bet you are gonna have to store it overhead. or make it completely removable to be reinstalled ater the 4 wheeler is removed. In transport it could simply lay on top of the quad.

Get us some pic's and measurements and someone on here can help. I have seen a lot of innovative ideas come to life on this little forum

?1. Don't Know but it is a Pace 5x8
?2. 3'11" wide

This is a mock up within 1" and the Chalk line next to the heater is the outside edge of the tier.

I can take some pictures of my factory built unit or run to any place that sells toy haulers. If you good with a welder and fab I think you could build one. I got mine off craigslist for 200 bucks.

El Cheapo Bed - Couch Idea

Postby Engineer Guy » Tue May 18, 2010 12:46 pm

My $0.02 worth... First figure out the desirable/maximum Bed width. Cut a piece of plywood to that desired width and Bed length. Run 1 or 2 piano hinges lengthwise to allow it to fold into the Couch config. Those hinges don't have to be in the center of plywood. It may be desirable to have the Couch back longer than the Couch seat, for example. Cut a piece of foam lengthwise with a bread knife so that the Couch back piece sits on the plywood. The other foam piece would be the seat, and would sit in front of the Couch back foam piece. In Bed mode, cover the foam cut point with a piece of loose memory foam so that the cut seam goes away.

Put a wood 'header' on the wall and build out some ~6" long wood brackets with notches, etc., so that the Couch back slants back a bit. Support them with diagonals that go back and down to where the floor and wall meet. In the Couch seat plywood just in front of the piano hinge[s] where the wall support brackets - perpendicular to the wall - are, drill several holes and drop in ordinary framing nails, or double-headed nails, as 'pins' to keep the Couch seat 'captured' and on the wall-mounted supporting brackets. Drill identical small holes in the wall edge of the plywood to support one side of the plywood in Bed mode. Support the Couch seat side where your knees are with removable 2" x 4"s or pipe for legs. The whole enchilada could be removed in moments. The Bed could also fold up on itself 'clamshell' style to allow maximum room for hauling. This would all depend on the support brackets design. Make some removable wood legs or use pipe screwed into flanges to support the Bed at the piano hinge point, and at the far side of the Bed not attached to the wall.

Alternately, 3 or 4 2" x 4"s 3' 11" long and notched halfway could slip into two wall headers mounted lengthwise that are notched halfway to accept these cross pieces. Nothing could move. Careful, tight carpentry would allow a nail or pin to also capture the Couch seat brackets in these same notches, and have them be removable. Or, notch the wall headers at different spots for the Bed mode 2 x 4s that don't interfere with the Couch brackets. Unfold the plywood from Couch mode - the wood Couch brackets above may still be required, depending on the design - and it's bedtime in ~5 mins..

Something like a vertical 1" x 2" screwed and glued around the edges of the plywood would keep the foam from slipping around in both Bed mode and Couch mode. Foam used as a seat tends to scootch forward with use unless captured with a wood edge, or with Velcro.

On a 'Full' width Bed with memory foam making the mattress taller than average, Full size fitted sheets - 54" x 75" - would fit the Bed nicely with a bit of slop, if you're a sheets-usin' kinda guy.

Besides saving some $$$, you can customize the Bed size vs. commercial metal Bed/Couch frames. You could stash storage bins underneath so long as they're kept a safe distance from your Heater.

I also used 1/2 in ply for a bed, supported on a wall ledge and 2 supports

... then use a 3 layer system of 1" regular foam with a cover; a thin pillow top from Ikea and a 3/4 length therma-rest; a little stiff; but forgiving and comfy and I never bottom out on the ply ...

The reason I use this system is it can all be rolled up and stored out of the way easily; the beds break down so I can store or carry other things such as a motorcycle or reconfigure from a single to a double when I have company ... ;), oh and did I mention it doesnt bottom out?

You can see the start of my fold down bed build someways down the thread here:

...may give you some ideas...I'm using an 8" 3 layer system that I bought off Overstock online. I'm still able to fit two bikes in there as well....
