Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

more things I need for my trailer

Postby jwhite » Sun Apr 10, 2011 9:32 pm

After this weekend I found out that I am going to need another honda generator so that one will run the air conditioner and another to run the other things like the battery charger for my golf cart my hot water heater and the microwave TV refridge ect.
It looks like 1 just won't do the trick,I had to shut off the AC when I went to sleep and then charge the golf cart while I was sleeping but when summer gets here I will need to run the AC all the time.
The whole reason why I built my toy hauler was so when I go to my sporting clays tournaments I would be able to get out of the hot weather when I wasn't shooting,I would have my own space at the gun club to chill out.
I also think I am going to have to put in a roof top AC = the portable AC I have takes a long time to cool the trailer down,I did a test this weekend and started it in the morning so it would run all day and by noon it was in the 80's it was OK as long as I was sitting in front of it but when I stood up the heat was really coming through the ceiling,I guess the top mounted AC helps with the cooler air coming in from the top down.
I also found out that I will need to get a small fridge the ice just won't last more than a couple days I froze some large blocks of ice and bought a 16lb bag of ice and by the 3rd day it was gone.
looks like I will be spending a couple thousand more on my trailer?

A couple thoughts come to my mind.

1. Are your roof and walls insulated?

2. What kind of cooler do you have?

I purchased one of the "extreme" coolers, and found that the ice lasts twice as long as it did in my old cooler. Now the old cooler is delegated to holding beer at BBQ's.

My trailer is extremely insulated 2 layers of the foam in the walls and ceiling, and I bought a extreme cooler the one that has the 2 lids.
My plan is to use the ice in the coolers and when they melt down switch to the small fridge.

A Window AC would work better than the portable AC unit. I don't know why but it does. Someone on here would probably be able to explain the reason for that than I could. I also saw a post a while back, but can't remember where, on someone using hoses or a box and a window unit set outside to cool the CT. Again maybe someone who had a better memory could steer you in that direction. Window air $99 vrs. roof top air $1000+. I am cheap and will do anything to not pay anymore than I have to.

I just noticed the portable A/C in your album, and was also going to suggest trying a window unit. I have three of those portable units at work, and it is true that they do not cool as well as a window unit. The vent hose for them gets hot, and the unit itself gives off a little heat, so for the BTU rating, they don't cool as well as a window unit that hangs half outside, because they are fighting the heat that they produce as well as the heat in the room.

If it were me, I would try to rig up something to test out what we are saying. If you happen to have a window unit to try it out with, a table and some cardboard and you can give it a test

I'm actually thinking about building one of the a/c units in a box myself this year.

I'm sticking with the window a/c again for this trailer. Worked well in my Scotty even though it was mounted low and have to be vented out of the dinette seating area to be effective.

I ordered my ct with a cargo door on the side at about the same height as it would be in my house. An a/c cools there well enough. I decided against building it into a back wall as then I'd have to cover the rear somehow if it was raining. Fo now my rear wall will have small screened windows for extra ventilation on nice days but will most likely get closed back up at night.

I am planning on a 6x12 v-nose with a ramp door. Any suggestions for AC (required by the CFO :D )??

Have looked at roof-mount but $$$$ (I can do if no other option).

I have seen the "back wall" idea but will be using ramp door for patio (in good weather) and closed up (in bad weather).

I don't mind "installing" AC each time as we tend to go to a place and stay until heading home.
