Anyone tow with a "vintage" pickup

Postby crumvoc » Sat Nov 10, 2012 6:41 pm

Thinking of getting a bit more capable TV. Right now I have a Dodge Dakota with a V6/automatic. Nice little pickup, but I want a little more load and "go" capacity. Been thinking about, and starting to look at, a 96 F150. Lots of them on Craigslist, many seem to be in very good shape, and not too expensive. Could pick up a really nice one for about $5k. Anyone else with experience with older TV's. Also, sort of intrigued by the prospect of an older F150 with the low HP/high torque I6 4.9 litre engine. Anyone with experience with one of those?

Yes it's older, way older than what you are talking about...not the load and go of my modern GMC but the kool factor offsets that.

I tow with a '96 Bronco with the 351 and it tows my loaded 3,500lb trailer fine, but you definitely know it's there going up hills.

My first car was a '79 Ford E-150 with the 4.9 ltr I-6, and I finally sold it with 249,000 miles, and used that to tow things all over the place. Didn't know or think about these things as much back then then, so I don't remember how well it did it, but it never complained other than some heat issues on long grades.
