I tow with a '96 Bronco with the 351 and it tows my loaded 3,500lb trailer fine, but you definitely know it's there going up hills.
My first car was a '79 Ford E-150 with the 4.9 ltr I-6, and I finally sold it with 249,000 miles, and used that to tow things all over the place. Didn't know or think about these things as much back then then, so I don't remember how well it did it, but it never complained other than some heat issues on long grades.

Truck: '96 Ford Bronco, Modified for off-road stuff
Trailer in progress: Not a tear drop exactly, sort of a mut of a couple different designs.
