12 volt wiring help

I want to put a speed control on the fan I have in my roof vent ,it only turns on or off.
Will a dimmer switch for a 110 volt light work like you buy at Lowes?
I am guessing it does but didn't want to buy one and find out different>?
I haven't done much 12 volt wireing other than hooking up a stereo?
