Proper Temp for Window Install???

Postby FatBoy BBQ » Thu Jan 12, 2012 10:14 am

First Question: What is the prevailing opinion on installing windows-
-Butyl Tape v. No Butyl Tape?

It's pretty nasty out in the midwest with a huge snow storm for the next couple days so, if one uses Butyl tape, is there a minimum temperature it must be outside?

I say (and this is only my opinion) that unless it's in the teens or below you should be fine. I'm no expert but have used some of that tape in my day.

If there isn't a reason you need to use your build why not wait untill the tempertutre is warmer ?
I have used the tape on installing some windows in a travel trailer
I used it during the summer and the tape was plyable and easy to use.
I'm in Ohio and the temperture is -4 with wind blowing 35 mph.

Wait?!

I've been looking up the working temps on all the glues/adhesives/paints/etc. that I'm using just so I know when I can work, and when I shouldn't. I don't mind working in colder temps as long as the materials are ok with. We COULD wait until warmer weather, but working on the teardrop is like a therapeutic stress-reliever for me. FatboyBBQ might feel the same way!

Not sure about working temps of butyl tape though. Sorry.

so I just got my windows in from Frank Bear. They do seem to have quite a thick seal to them that will be compressed. I guess I will call him to inquire whether i should use the tape or not. I tend to think even if the tape was overkill it would be worth it in this case.
