My new Dutch Oven!

Well its been awhile since I have been on here. I have been sick but am better now. I just picked up this dutch oven at a local flea market and am trying to clean the rust off the inside. Can't wait until I can use it. I have other cast iron pieces and they all need a cleaning and re-seasoning.

Try electrolysis methods. Will dissolve the rust, and then season it.

If you have several pieces that all need cleaned up, get a big enough container to use electrolysis on all of them, I did several pieces at once last time I did this.

For a small individual item, I have put a wire brush attachment on my drill before.

Both methods will require seasoning afterwards...

I have a pot just like yours, and I wanted to put coal on top of it.
I cut a license plate in half lengthways, then pop-riveted the pieces into a circular band. I put that on top so the coals don't fall off. A person has to be careful, but it worked for me!
Any sheet metal will do, that is what I had handy in the garage.

That exactly what I was going to do. I have plenty of license plates laying around. I put some apple cider vinegar in it and it did its job. The rest was a sos pad and a wire brush. Now just waiting to season it.

I think I saw one that looked just like that in the woods on top of a stump. So apple cider vinegar will clean it up... hhmmmm, I'm gonna try that, if I can find it again. Is there a point where you can't revive cast iron? Thanx!

I length of stout chain works well also
to keep coal on a domed lid.
Just coil it in a circle near the edge.

An old gas stove grate works well to allow room
underneath for hot coals too !

So got it seasoned and made some cioppino tonight. By the way.......tasted great!

Apple cider vinegar worked for me but you have to have patients. You put it in there and let it sit. I used the green scotchbrite pad and it cleaned right up.
