found old lantern Quick lite year?

Found a coleman quicklite lantern today would like to find out what year it was made. no date made in kansas nickle bottom with a brass top looks like original globe

While I don't have one with a Q99 generator, I believe that you need to preheat it prior to lighting. Doug

Yeah you need to preheat the generator. In the old days they said to use two wooden matches to preheat it. They are a little tricky to light. Somewhere I found pdf directions and I can email them to you if you want. I have no idea where I found them so I can't link you.

Nice - especially the mica globe. I've got a March 27. Looks like yours has an air inlet on the fill cap as if it used a separate pump. Somebody probably replaced it down the line.

The looped Q99 generator is no longer available new (I think) and most replace them with a R55 roto-generator that is still available new. The R55 is straight with a built in cleaning tip. The Q99 can't really be cleaned so if it's plugged it's pretty much shot.

You might want to check this thread over on the CCF before you try to light yours. It talks about fireballs and the distinct need to pre-heat the generator before lighting...

You can still buy Q99 generators off Ebay, but they go in the 20 - 30 dollar range for NOS (new old stock). I have a bunch of em that I have cleaned up, and one NOS that I'm saving. I have 5 of the old quick light lanterns that use those generators. I've only tried firing one up, and never got it to burn quite right.

I've got one of those. They are really bright just like my house lamps. I preheat the gen. with a micro torch I have. Crack the valve open just after the residual fuel lights off in the mantel. If you do it wrong you will know it! I recommend a few practice runs outside if your not used to these lanterns!
