I'll have to keep my eyes open for one. From what I've read, it looks like the 200A turned green around 1980.

So, how many Colemans does one need to be considered a Coleman Keeper?

My 1948 220D got here yesterday! Was surprised when I pulled it out of the box and it was still full of fuel. :?

After fighting with the fuel cap (which is probably why it was never emptied), I dumped the fuel into a jar to see how much crud would settle. It wasn't too bad, but it will need cleaned out. Also found a small piece of wood in the fount - about 2-1/2" long, a little fatter than a toothpick - I'm sure that contributed to some of the crud. Not sure how it got there, but I managed to pull it out. I should able to finish cleaning it all up tonight. Once again, this won't be an award winning show piece, but it'll clean up pretty well, and it will look pretty cool towering over my matching 242C.

I too have received lanterns full of fuel. One had fuel soaked into the cardboard box. Last weekend at the Dam Gathering Kevin A and I were wrenching on lanterns and found a old style pull top beer tab in side the fount.

Hmm... guess I know that the all the gaskets did their job then.

Who knows the last time this thing was used. The fuel came out a "smokey blue" color

That must have been one heck of a party that lantern attended. :FNP

Couldnt wait to get home from work so I could start playing with the 220D.

I took it all apart. Everything but the check valve. And soaked everything in white vinegar. Piece by piece I pulled stuff out of the vinegar bath and went to town with some #0000 steel wool. Hot damn it started gettin pretty.

Image

The fount got rinsed, cleaned with vinegar and BB's, and rinsed a few more times with vinegar, then finally some Coleman fuel. Then I polished EVERYTHING with Blue Magic metal polish and reassembled.

Havent fueled it up yet, but it holds pressure and hisses when I open the valve. Should be good to go! Might have to go take apart the 242C and give it a real cleaning like I did to this one.

Nice job on that one Zach. You really tear them down, I don't pull the burner assembly that far apart. It's a beautiful piece of work...Doug

Thanks Doug. I like tearing things apart to see how they work. There was some nasty stuff in the fount so I figured I might as well just go to town on the whole thing. Now that I have an understanding of how everything works together, I'll be better able to troubleshoot any problems that I come across.

Went backpacking last night and took the little 242C with me. Man I LOVE that little lantern! Burns bright enough, and it doesn't eat up a bunch of fuel.

Then on the way home this afternoon, I was just driving along and yard sale jumped right out in front of my car. Somehow these two managed to land in my front seat...

Little red is gonna need some work, but the ventilator is in really nice condition. The 220F fount should be repainted, but is otherwise in pretty good shape. Got the pair for $15.

Geesh Zach, you are totally infected with lanterns now!! There's no turning back. No cure, no immunizations. Soon, you'll be driving around aimlessly looking for yard sales and abandoned lanterns. :applause:
