Nov 1954 242C $12

I got this at an estate sale Aug 26th on my way to work. Also some wrenches, rasps and a slick. ( nobody there knew what it was called, just a very large chisel ). I didn't get in the house to look for cast iron as it was a mob site and I better get to work.

I did not realize how small the one mantle lanterns are until I saw this on a shelf in the old shed. I snatched it right up. A quick inspection and i can't see any damage, just very dirty and collar rusty. Pretty normal for a barn find.

I probably will not be able to work on it until Nov. Knobs turn ok, will put oil in the pump before trying any funny business

Nice job. I love sales like that. You just never know what you will find. That lantern should clean up nice. :applause:

Here is a pic of the 242 with the slick

Slicks are chisels used in log building construction. Or other such chores

Nice score Randy! That lil' 242 will clean up great, don't be surprised of it becomes your favorite. Great price too, well below what they are bringing on the bay or around here for sure.

Now for a test - hold a magnet up to the fount - if it does not stick - it's brass! If it is brass, beware of stress cracks in the fount - the paint may cover them up. The steel founts are usually better about not having stress cracks. The 242's were bad about this! be sure to do a dunk test of a pressurized fount to check (they'll reveal themselves in a tiny stream of bubbles

I love the classic look of the 242's! Still looking for one of those.

Dawn, if you want a project 242C, I picked this up last weekend for $3 because it had a reflector on it and I wanted that part. You can have it for shipping, or if you will be seeing TLC in the near future, he can bring it to you for free. Its got a cracked globe and I havent tried anything on it, but its yours if you want it. It needs a total makeover!

If you dont want it, its up for grabs!

Randy;
Nice score on your 242, I was sure happy when I got mine. Mine is in dire need of a fuel cap gasket.

Dawn:
I'd even consider a special trip (just for you) to deliver Steve's offer. We could hook up at Kohler SP. I need to camp there for a couple days before the snow flies!! Let me know.

I can drink all day.....provided I don't start till 11PM

Now that is a real offer! Dawn, that one looks easy after your 200A rebuild. Sounds like Tom wants a reason for a little road trip anyway lol.

Got some time to tinker a bit on the 242, the font side is brass, the base is iron. Got it to pump up and seems to be holding pressure, and turn the knob on and it hisses. I might try gas in it tomorrow

hey Randy, take another look at the date code on that 242. They quit making them in '50 IIRC, when the 200 was introduced. It's older than you think I think. 8)

Date is on the bottom, and the numbers are 4 and 11

So i took that to mean post WWII

Ok, it doesn't have a brass top nut. but a special iron bolt that does not look like it was cobbled on. Could that mean it is a 1944? Saved some brass.
