Now for something a bit different - Frankenstove

Postby starleen2 » Mon Aug 30, 2010 8:50 pm

Well it’s finally starting to cool down in Texas enough to go camping without coming back all sunburned. As, usual I have to decide what Coleman gear I’m going take. Last week end – I cooked breakfast outside in the backyard as a test of the equipment that I’m going to take. This is my dilemma. While using the oven on the three burner – it took away from effectively using the side two. The center has to be lit at all times and the oven, if moved to the outside burners just takes up too much space. So I decided that I’d take the three burner and a two burner stove. The problem is the oven – it’s gonna take up one stove! I tried using a single burner 505 and 533 on it but you really can’t adjust the flame like you can a regular cook stove. So after looking around at the pile of spare parts, I cobbled together this out of some sheet metal and old stove parts:

The test went well and the oven reached 450 degrees in not time. I cranked it down a bit a let it settle at 350 degree and it held for about and hour until I shut it down. Now that I’m sure it works, I’ll add the aluminum angle feet on it!

Now the oven can do it's thing by itself

Nice Scott. But, don't wake me up until the biscuits and sausage are done -- and I like my coffee black.

Scott,
Wait 'til Jeremy and Doug see this...

That's cool, got an oven and you could add a grill for regular cooking.
Fabulous!!!
And... There was a guy asking about single burner stoves over in General D.
You should finish it out and make it look like a vintage one burner Coleman, then post it on the Coleman site and ask if anyone knows what model/year it is.

Say Now... That looks like the perfect fit for a Waffldog Iron.

Scott, that is cool!!! :applause: :applause:

Do you have a blue flame with the oven on? I had found with my 500 stove the as soon as I put the oven on top the flame would go yellow from lack of air.

If you are having the same issue, you may want to add some air holes to the side of the case.

Yep got a nice blue flame - but it's hard to see in the photos plus I was using some bad gas too - BTW - NEVER mix old fuel with new fuel and think that It's going to give the old stuff new life - it doesn't! I had about 1/2 gallon of some vintage gas from an old can - I really wanted to empty the can to keep it - so I mixed the two - it's all crap now. So now I have a gallon of really smelly cleaning fluid (or fire starter!)

Congrats on a great design...I have given some thought to doctoring up something like that for those really large pans that scorch the sides of a regular stove. I used my oven this last weekend and had to have it kicked sideways a bit to clear the hinge on the stove top on my 424. This takes care off all of that! Doug

Hate to go off topic, but is there a way to tag or subscribe to a thread so that you can refer back to it, in the event no one replies to it for awhile?

Scott....is that the same fuel tank pictured in all the pics? Maybe it's the camera angle, but somehow, It appears that 1 is a different tank, gen. is more centered. I've been looking at my junk "parts" stoves. I'm going to have to tweek the gen on a bit of an angle to make it fit into a smaller box with the tank tabs. I've also thought about cutting down the tube between the 2 burners and trying to make a 2 burner right next to each other, still keep the 1 shut off valve. Using 2 main burners. Wonder if it would have enough poop to drive it? Almost sounds like a "here, hold my beer, watch this" experience! Doug

Doug,
I was looking at the tank and I think it's from a 413E, but not sure... Not up to speed enough on these.
