Vintage accessories....you got 'em?

Postby doug hodder » Sun Nov 21, 2010 12:09 am

I had forgotten all about this piece. It was stuck away upstairs. A nice sized suitcase 21x14x7, perfect for the Nomad on a weekend trip, no tears on the interior and the exterior is in great shape. I had put some vintage travel stickers on it years ago, Yellowstone, Mt. Ranier, Yosemite, Sun Valley. It was manufactured by a company in Seattle by the name of Thunderbird. Haven't found any info on it yet for a specific date, but it'll work for me.

I know it may sound stupid to some and actually may defeat the purpose of a compact camper, but I'm all for gathering up as much vintage travel/camping accessories as possible for the whole "period" look.

Anyone else have some nice accessories that they want to share with us all? Post here, kitchen gadgetry, dishes, decor, whatever....there is lots of inexpensive stuff around and it doesn't have to be cast iron! Thing is..most all of it still works fine, it's just that a lot of people don't want that stuff anymore. Doug

I have a suitcase of similar vintage... it's a straw-yellow w/ brown piping and a brown satin interior.

I had thought of using it on the tongue of my tear, stood on it's back so that the top opens forward and down... and with padded, luan dividers inside to fit my three 200A lanterns. They're a perfect fit.

To weatherproof it (as much as could be done) I'd smear it repeatedly w/ beeswax and orange oil.

My vintage camping equipment stares back at me out of the mirror every morning!

Besides my 60's picnic stove, I'm still looking.

Aww man where do I start? For the vintage trailer rallies I have my collection of plaid Thermo's, Skotch Koolers, Complete set of vintage Melmac, Conch shell lamp, and I can't forget my old lady wicker/seashell, glitter purse made in Japan purse. For the teardrop/Cooler Near the Lake rally I bring a few lanterns and a combination of old and new stuff. For the this weekends trip I brought a Coleman stove, stand, and two old lanterns. We brought more wood and food than we did Tchotkies. Turned out we parked on the fronage road by the lake, and it was cold and windy the whole four days.

Dawn...I've got a "never fired" Scotch BBQ and a number of other Scotch pieces. Nice pic-nic basket Scott. I've always wanted a really nice one. That's some cool stuff! Doug

I'm a history major, and grew up with parents who refinished a lot of antiques & hardwood floors, and renovated several old houses in New England. I have an affinity for mid (20th) century stuff myself.

Currently, I'm fond of Red-Mon picnic baskets, and have several of them, including one I've modified as a trunk on one of my motorcycles:

This is my toaster - Sunbeam T-39, IIRC (doesn't go camping with me, obviously):

My period cooler:

My first car (1949 Plymouth):

Retro booth I built for Gurl:

The picnic baskets have become carry-alls... when I arrive at Gurl's house, her daughters expect me to have a basket of stuff... clothes, food, books... whatever I need to bring with me... sort of a poor man's suitcase.

I used to have a Flamingo brand gallon jug, in a plaid/snakeskin pattern, and an old 7-Up galvanized cooler... but ex got those in the divorce.

Like mvperini, I have an old radio, not Bakelite, but lots of veneer... my great-grandmother's... but once again, it doesn't go camping.

Doug, I have a similar old suitcase that I snagged from my Grandmother's (With her permission). It had some old relatives memories in it. Old Army photos from WWII, his discharge papers, photos from his retirement from the water company in the 70's and some other misc stuff. Kind of interesting. I'd post a photo, but it's too much work right now :)

Here's some of my accessories, wooden folding chairs, my folks old "little brown cooler", 242C and 425, fly rod and creel, Icyhot vacuum bottle with a real cork for a stopper, and you always need a 1947 Sears Waterwitch outboard. That thing gets more attention!

Doug,

I lugged my old suitcases around for a while, but then decided it would be a lot easier to just bolt them to the roof rack!
I still carry things in them, just not my clothes... ;)

Waiting for "someday" will leave you on your deathbed wondering why you didn't just rearrange your priorities and enjoy the time you had, instead of waiting for a "better" time to come along...

Rob, you should remove the old link under (WWW) and profile or pair it up with what's in your signature. Awesome teardrop!

We found this Featherflite vintage thermos by Poloron in an antique store. We thought it fit the color scheme of the tear :)
