My other hobby vintage radios

Postby kzhorse » Sat Mar 31, 2012 4:26 pm

I found this on E-Bay and already had one of it brothers so I picked it up,This one has a steel case that had a nasty rusty gray wrinkled finish so I striped it down and steelwooled it.Now the question should I paint it back the grey color or do it in Coleman green? The radio has no collector value and I can always repaint. For some reason I like the Sparton radios.

If it were me, I would not only paint it Coleman green, but I would get a Coleman decal for it!

Is it in working order, or do you plan on making it work?

All the tubes check good and I have all the caps but the filter caps 30/40 Mfd.So I may start on this week. All it does is hum so it should come back to life it is a pretty simple design only 6 tubes and no transformer.

Good idea..Coleman Green and a decal!!! It will make people wonder if they missed something!

If you don't like green, the paint it red with a Coleman decal. Either way, you have a winner!!

For the caps I order in bulk from here.

For info on most vintage radios I go here.

As far as tubes where ever I can find them I carry a list of popular tubes I can use and when I find them I pick them up or on E-Bay when I need one I dont have.
And there is a lady in Pa. that has lots of old radio knobs.

I guess I'll buck the trend on the responses.....I'd do it up with a wrinkle finish or a paint job as close to like it was originally done....Coleman green is way too bright on it, but that's just me. Maybe something like a sea foam green or an ivory if not close to original. A fabric cover for the speaker and a close to original color will fool many more people than a kelly green paint job and a sticker...but we all got opinions. Doug

Well today was pretty good started off with a 1976 200a for $5 then a 1984 290/CLX with case for $10 and ended with a 1935 Philco model 60 for $20 and some tubes for $1 each. The philco will stay original and sit next to my 89.

Cleaned up the 200a and she burns good.

That's OK....it's your project....I do a lot of paint things that others think might be out of line as well. I caught some flak on a 1930's Coleman stove that I painted red from some of the Coleman people. Like I told them...It's my project. Doug

Actually I dont like it but give it a try anyway,I will probally redo it in hammered silver and brown on the brass trim.
Just figured I would see what it looked like.
