Jeep tiny camping trailer

Postby steveyos » Sun Jan 15, 2012 11:58 pm

Hi everyone here is my build.

I wanted a light weight trailer to pull with my Jeep Wrangler. I had a small tent trailer but when camping in some areas, like the desert when it is windy did not work well. The tent trailer was also a hassle to set up.

I stated with a 4x7 trailer from Tractor Supply ($599.00) I removed the back ramp but left the sides for bracing. The bottom of the trailer was covered with a plastic board then the floor was built with 2x2s and insulated with 1 ½ foam board.

The walls were constructed with 1/8 inch hardboard panel on the inside and White FRP board on the outside. In the middle is 3/4" x 4' x 8' Polyisocyanurate Insulated Sheathing making a sandwich which was glued together with a 1x3 around the edge.
The roof was constructed in a similar manner.

The rear galley door, window and door were all purchased on eBay.
I used a lot of Gorilla glue and calking so it was usually on my hands when I should have taken pictures but did not want to get it on my camera.

I took it on it's first trip this weekend and it pulled very well with the Jeep.
I still have some trim to complete on the inside along with some wiring. I also need to get a memory foam pad.

The only problem I saw on the trip was even though it is well insulated (R-5) I did have a condensation issue. I read about the CO2 issues so I installed a detector and am not using any heater. I was in the 20's where I camped so I did not leave a window cracked open and I was a little cooler than I would have liked. Is condensation normal? any thoughts?

Nice work. How long did it take you to build?

I made extensive use of Gorilla Glue on my build as well. I dealt with the glue-on-the-hands problem by wearing nitrile gloves any time I was gluing something.

I'm afraid I don't have an answer on your condensation question...

Awesome. And people thought I was going quick on my build because I had it camp-ready in a month and a half...

Hi,

You need to have some ventilation to reduce/eliminate the condensation. Cracking the window, even a tiny amount would help. I bought a solar vent for my future build, so that it will work even when I'm not using the TD/TTT.

Very nice looking camper.

how much room did you leave for "foot space" under your galley? Will there be enough once you put in a mattress?

I like the rear doors. Where are they listed on eBay? Nice project. I especially like what you are pulling it with.

Condensation is a good/bad thing, it means you have it rather tight as far as air leakage, thats a good thing, won't be drafty, crackin a window or vent will alivieate the condensation
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is

I have 12" and plan on using a 4" memory foam pad.

I got the rear doors and the window from seller bottomdollarsurplusinc on ebay. You should be able to search eBay for him. He has lots of items, low prices and fast shipping.
