Cliff, glad to see your post. Sorry about all your medical problems. I'm diabetic too but have been very lucky with the eyes, no problems there at all, in fact my prescription hasn't even changed in five years. Good luck with your procedures...will be praying for you and looking forward to seeing the progress on your tear.

I sure am getting anxious to go camping again. We just can't seem to get 3 good days in a row weather wise.

Hi, Cliff:

Sorry to hear that you're having back and eye problems. That, combined with the diabetes makes working on the trailer a bit of a drag. But, you're almost there with it; so, don't give up now! Just work on it when you can and it'll get done when it's done. :)

I'm happy you are keeping up with me on email. i started organizing my garage and tools yesterday so that I don't have to do that after i buy my ply. i have a way of getting the cart before the horse. i hope to get the ply next weekend and start marking my profile. i realize i might be building this tear for 9 months plus but maybe not. I'm trying to close the sell of a house and it's taking my time and energy. Hope your health allows you to resume full steam ahead on the build.

Thanks all for the support the issues are just issues and won't stop the progress! If we can have a weekend where it stays above 60 and no rain I can atleast get the trailer sealed and after seeing bobs trailer and his aluminum I'm heading that way. Sheri and I have decided to get 4 x8 .040 sheet aluminum in Red for the sides and get either mirror finish for the top or the clear (dull) finish AL. The thing is since the trailer is 5 1/2' wide I will have to have 2 seams on the top and the hatch will have 1 seam. Not sure how I want or like the look of seams but it is what it is. Thought of doing a seam straight down the middle but not sure I like that either .

Angela one thing I learned this time is to get your materials first and cut all your pieces at one time it will go together faster and usually smoother! Hope your house sales soon especially in the ATL.

Well night all!

Well had some progress one day last week and today and even will do some tomorrow! Used some epoxy filler/putty to fill my holes and the seams on the tear last week and left them alone till today when I pulled the tear out andsanded it all down with 60 grit on the orbital sander. Blew all the dust off (and into my eyes  ) and cut my fiberglass tape and cut it to fit the seams, used blue masking tape to hold it down in the wind. Mixed up a batch of epoxy and started rolling it over the tape and and got a good coat on it, squeezed the air out and put a second coat dowm on it. Then made a second batch and did the second seam on the top of the roof and then went ahead and started putting epoxy down on the roof did everything but the 2" before you get to the edge of the tear and the front. Tomorrow probably wont do anything except sanddown the places on the sides I puttied today and coat them and seam the sides after a trip to West Marine to pick up some more tape. I probablt will do the doors also and cut out my lasdt 2 cabinet doors. Had to take a couple of days off of work because its so slow, boss asked me if I would mind?? Heck like I told him as long as I have a job when I get back of course I don't ming especially as I picked the presstiest 2 days this week . O e lil tidbit to remember when you epoxing one of these tears is don't forget where the tongue, I did and did a three stooges trip and hit the concrete on my left knee and tore it up! Well thats it today will take pics tomorrow.

Re: "The Black Hole" build 3-6-12

Postby CliffinGA » Sat Mar 10, 2012 11:14 pm

We had great weather last several days and I was able to start epoxying!!!! First thing I did was to sand the whole trailer and cut my fiberglass tape to fit for the cross seams and I used painters tape to hold in place while I got the epoxy ready to start. I would run epoxy roller over an area and then pull the tape to next area. Worked great except you don't want to get in a hurry or you trip over the tongue and scrape the heck out of your leg and knee (no pics this time ). Once I got the 2 cross seams down with epoxy real good I hit the roof with what was left out of the first batch and did a small one to do the front also. Friday afternoon I got home and pulled the trailer out and and cut the tape for the roof to edge seams and with the help of my lovely wife was able to tape it down to the tear. She went in and came back out to help some more and this is when I got in trouble!! Whenyour epoxing explain to who ever helps you that if they get it on there clothes, there is no going back !! You figure that the personthat does my laundry and tells me to only put on my crappy t-shirts when working on the tear would think about this when she see's me putting on solvent gloves, really!! It would have been fine except she backed into me when I was pulling the roller up out of the pan and now has a 7" epoxy stripe on the sleave of the GA sweat jacket I paid $30 fo  r on her birthday in November! So today I got a friend checking Kohl's here in GA looking for another one! Well back to the tear, got the side seams and the walls done and the roof a second coat. By the way always start on the roof and then work your way down, keeps you LOTS cleaner  ! This afternoon pulled it out and sanded it down and put 3rd coat on roof and second on the side. Tomorrow I'll get off my butt and get the hatched skinned and do some small stuff to it.

Saturday morning and the front seam, sides

and now the doors, front and the sides after 2nd and 3rd coat

Well thats it for now, hopefully with good weather next week I can get the hatch sanded down and a couple coats of epoxy on it and 1 seam and then maybe enough for 1 more coat on everything and then next weekend primer and paint!!

looks great, just curious what radius did you put on the fiberglass edges.

Re: "The Black Hole" build 3-10-12 Epoxied

Postby CliffinGA » Sat Apr 14, 2012 11:16 pm

Great day today.......for do overs! Didn't apply epoxy correctly first time, had to sand half the tape off and re-tape mostly done over the last month when I had a free moment to work on the tear. Today was the first full day I was able to get out in the sun andpull it out of the garage and do major work on it. Completely sanded the thing down with 80grit to get all of the epoxy runs out,Yes it was that bad! Then had to sand a 2 ft section of tape of the front drivers side curve and the front passenger edge 16" because of overzealousness (my word) sanding on the head DA in charge (me). I used body filler in the places around the door openings and the cut out for electricals in sides where the plywood tore and more sanding. Took a tip from Forrester on my other thread and soaked the tape first and then squeezed excess out in the container before applying to the 2 places. Then while I was working it anyway made another 3oz batch and applied over the rest of the tear. Been using the 6" foam rollers from HD and it works great. Doesn't sound like alot but while doing this I would take a break from sanding and go edge part of the sidewalks. My arm and hand would start hurting from the vibration of the edger and so I woud take a break and go sand. 30 mins later my other arm would start hurting so I would go edge again. Once all the edging was done I moved on to weed eating the backyard, blowing the back yard, cleaning off the front porch and blowing it, and washing the front chairs and my truck. By doing that you get a crap load done and then when you passout in the front yard because your sugar was too low you can feel you got some stuff accomplished . Tomorrow will just be a quick coat on the tape and rest of the tear and its off to the lake for a bachelor fishing/boating party. Have a great rest of the weekend and week! If I'm lucky I can get the thing sanded and start prinering it next weekend!
