Living hinge

Postby R. W. Alexander » Wed Aug 04, 2010 3:04 pm

I put the plastic hinges on yesterday. They work really good.

I was going to put up a wider aluminum rain drip edge, but I did not like how it looked against the trailer.

So I took some leftover .032 aluminum. Cut a couple of 1 3/4" strips 36" long, and clamped it between 2 radius-ed pieces of 3/8" ply. And lightly hammered away to form a j channel. I then heated up the aluminum and bent it around a curved piece of ply to get the curve I needed above the door.

I got a 50ft coil of plastic hinge from Monroe engineering
http://www.monroeengineering.com/hinges ... -hinge.htm

It is a snap to install. I put some 1/8" x 1" aluminum flat bar on top marked some holes and drilled and countersink 3/16" holes on 6" centers.

I messed up.

Postby R. W. Alexander » Fri Aug 06, 2010 4:27 pm

I did a boo, boo, on my rear hatch handle. I put it to close to the bottom edge. Which resulted in a large angle offset. I had drilled the hole already, so I was committed to putting the handle in that area.

So I figured out how to fix my problem. I cut off part of the shaft to the handle and added a small flex shaft that I never use. And welded it to the handle shaft.

That took care of the problem. No gaps.

Thank you. I does look better than the one I was going to use. And a lot cheaper than the $1.95 a foot price for J-channel. If I can use what I have lying around the shop. So much the better.

I don't think so. But did you know that the difference between a journeyman and a apprentice is..... the journeyman can hide his mistakes better.

Except for a few items the trailer is done

Postby R. W. Alexander » Tue Aug 10, 2010 10:44 pm

I got most of the finish work done today. The head liner is in. I got the L.E.D. trailer lights connected, and put in a acrylic mirror with a mountain scene engraving. At this point the trailer is about done.

The maiden voyage will be Yellowstone Park. I have wanted to go to canyon village by Yellowstone falls for quite some time. As for how long it took to build. I started on July 6th, with the first cuts into some plywood. for a total of 24 working days. I have also started working on some new windows for #2. It is a Lexan window that's a 1/4" thick that fits into a window gasket and will fit into a plywood cutout in the side wall of the trailer.
