I do have a safety concern about the use of the dry ice box. As the dry ice evaporates it gives of carbon dioxide gas. Carbon dioxide is heavier than air, so my concern would be if it were to leak into the sleeping cabin, it may cause the occupants to suffocate. I would be careful here, and maybe put a vent somewhere for the gas to escape.

I've been pondering vent alternatives to the ubiquitous ceiling vent fan... and perhaps for your cooler we can devise a very small 12V vent system complete with a tiny fan to exhaust the CO2... it could be swiiched on when retiring... but you'd also need an additional micro-orifice in the cooler shell to allow air to enter the cooler.

This would be similar to the vent layout I'm thinking of to vent my deep cycle 12V storage battery, since it will be buried within the teardrop near the trailer axle

Yup, again and again, it's pretty cool the knowledge, information, and support that's shared here. Great build by the way too!

There has got to be alot of info on the dry ice thing on the internet, try some google searches and report back! If the coolers is sealed and no where near connected to the cabin, I'm not seeing the worry though personally. You will have ventilation in the tear anyway correct? You want to have a little fan going at all times, like a computer fan even when the weather is great just to bring in O2 and mix things up a bit. Might want to not worry about venting the cooler and focus on a couple of super quiet tiny low level fans in the cabin because that is an issue cooler or not because of the excellent point of CO2 being heavier than O2 in such a small box.

:applause:   Oh how cute........Awesome build you have going. If you decide to use dry ice you might seal the box with some pvc shower liner. It used pvc cement. Really I would use it anyway to keep any liquids contained.. btw are the doors to be insulated? Or did I miss a picture?

Keep up the good work!

thank you all for the kind words...it's motivating! i feel like i'm sharing the build with friends...friends with really good ideas.

i have been reading-up on the off-gassing of dry ice, and i'm learning that CO2 would be contained with the way i have sealed the ice box. but it's a big chance to take so i am strongly considering the fans like some of you have suggested. my only concern is loosing cold...i want to figure out a way to vent and retain cold at the same time. i may be asking for too much.

miriam, you didn't miss a pic. the ice box doors will be insulated and weather stripped to keep in all that good cold! the hatch will be insulated too in order to control galley temps.

it's dark out and all i'm doing is watching TV. i desperately want to go outside and work on the TD instead! this has become an addiction...a fun addiction.

construction has slowed because of the heat, but i finally got out to the back yard to do some more work on the Menehune.

i installed both interior door frames. the frame is blind-doweled for strength. the long piece on the left hides the seam (where i joined two sheets of ply) and hides the porch light wires that drop down from the ceiling. i routed a channel on the backside for the wires. i think i will add a piece to the right side so that side extends to the ceiling as well.
Image

i built a box (from scraps) that will house the one switch that will control both porch lights. i'm going to try my hand at carving and carve a tiki head on the box cover.
Image

the door frame is 3/8" smaller than the door opening so that it can accomodate a rubber seal.

and as a plus, i found a vintage insulated jug at an antique store for $10!

I've been thinking about your icebox dillemma. What if you were to build a smaller ice box (or boxes) and put it/them inside of your existing ice box? Then you would have several options. You can either remove them and store them outside when you are occupying the cabin, or you can install an exhaust fan in the galley icebox. Any gases coming from the smaller boxes would then be exhausted to the outside by the fan.

Yeah, I was just thinking another strip on the top right side would make it look balanced! It's looking good though!!

hello all,

construction has been slower than i'd like...dang life keeps getting in the way. :D

i finally had a chance to make some more sawdust this weekend!

The doors are on! The trim is 2.5" wide, but I used 1.5" trim on the door frame because the width would be doubled by the door's trim.
Image

Image

There was no way to center the handle on the door trim, so I had to add a little bump. It would have worked without the bump, but I didn't like how it looked.
Image

Each side will have a porch light controlled by one switch for both lights.
Image

I made my own bus bars with 1/8" aluminum and 1"x3" poplar (all scrap pieces). All the lights and outlets will route through here, then to the battery. I will build a box with a lid around these pieces.
