Sorry about all the grief you've had with the shady seller on Ebay. I guess I've been pretty lucky. No bad experiences at all. Deryk, your vardo turned out beautiful. :FNP I love the walls. ( I got the same stuff for my walls) :D
I'm glad it seems to be working out for you with Ebay.
All the best,
Bob (& Reggie)

RE: Candidate For Your Build #3

Postby mezmo » Sat Dec 17, 2011 12:57 am

Hi Deryk,

I came across this 1950s Gypsy/Showmans Van on Youtube.

Maybe you could do a copy for build #3?

Ha! At least it's an interesting few minutes to watch. Caution;

Well, I won a 2nd little potbelly stove on ebay...I contacted the seller told him what happened to the first one, and how it needs to be packed tightly in a box inside of a box with packing around it. So of course he didnt totally listen and the legs were broken off of it... so he refunded me my money and I returned it... ok done with that lol

So was looking on craigslist and found someone selling a Nu-way woodstove and a nu-way propane stove and 4 flue sections for $99. I emailed him and went to pick it up. I was hopeing it was the 12k btu propane model because its a smaller footprint. Well it was the 16k model Im not really gonna complain got it for $90 dollars.

The woodstove model was a little rusty so I sanded it down and hit it with high temp paint and have it up on ebay lol.

The propane unit he said was only fired up twice the burner was real clean as was the rest of it. So I had a stainless steel through deck fitting that I bought for the first failed stove so I mounted it on saturday and had the stove up and running on sunday. I think its mainly gonna only be on a little higher then the pilotlight but it warmed the cabin up real nice. I need to add a heat shield behind the stove next time Im down at my friends place. I ran the propane line through the galley to the stove, the 12 foot regulator and hose I bought was "just" long enough lol to be able to sit the 20lb cylinder on the ground and close the galley doors. That works for me. One day I might pick up a longer hose but the place I know that does it is about an hour or so away so not sure when I feel like takeing the trip.

The chimney pipe on top with the cap isnt really gonna stay up there just thought it looked funny.

That is totally awesome! You can get a wooden bucket of water and a birch leaf branch and have a regular suana. :campfire:

Oh, this 1 is propane, I picked it up off of craigslist got a great price for it and he said he only used it once or twice the burner was clean. Its the 16,000btu model lol, but I got this one and the wood stove model for $90 and sold the woodstove model for $54. I wish it was the smaller one because its 9" deep vs mine at 12"...in little trailers every inch matters lol.

Im very happy with it, gonna be camping in it this 3 day weekend (in my friends side yard lol) I still need to pick up 2 new heavier weight tires so I can take her out for a spin. I have a possible camping event last weekend in feb, but all depends on weather conditions...Its about 4.5 to 5 hour trip if it might be too cruddy Im gonna pass on it... dont want someone skidding into me lol.

so anything new with your Vardo did you get your new tires ? A quick question about your propane stove if you had a metal mug or a pot would it keep it warm as I have been looking at stoves lately and would like to hear from someone that actually has one...How about some more pictures of your vardo ?

Hello,

Well actually, just installed the new tires today. I stuck with 12" because the space was a bit tight to put a bigger size tire in...oh well live and learn. I just have to go slow when takin her off roading lol.

Yeah, I toasted a sandwich on the top of the heater, im sure with a metal bottomed mug it would stay hot. I havent really done anything to her lately with the winter thing going on. I did add a 4" mem foam topper to the futon...only problem is my head is closer to the ceiling when sitting on it like a couch...so I slouch lol.

I do sleep in it almost every other weekend when I go down to visit my friend, and is more comfortable then my boat cause its insulated.

Sorry been a while, life got kinda busy.

Ive been taking her camping this year, 4 times so far this spring. Longest trip was 420 miles rt to upstate New York. Other 3 spots were all in NJ. Plannin on 5 other trips this summer which will carry me through mid july lol.... like i said i worked all last summer building, now is play time.

The heater worked great, camped in my friends side yard with 16' outside temp and was toasty warm inside... so my only concerns now for going winter camping is the roads lol.

Im at work, but need to post some pictures of the back galley box. Picking up a folding table this weekend need more room when cooking.

Well been a very busy summer for me this year. Ive got about 3300 miles on the axle this season, with several more trips left to go! Ive gotten lots of positive attention everywhere I go. Ive been thoroughly enjoing it. I am contemplating adding a cabinet inside to hold a porta pottie. I did put her up for sale, no serious takers... might try again in the spring. I started a saveings account for the next build lol.

I did finally install corbels Image Image

I also did make an awning...hopefully if the weather is nice next weekend I can put it up and take some pictures! I got a coat of varnish on the 2 poles and of course an hour later it started to rain...always something lol

yours is really coming along you just might be going more gypsy and less pirate now. do you find it feels more like a house and less like a portable shelter now? What was your over all weight?

Thanks...I definatly think of it as my 2nd home... and do drag it to friends houses to stay in if Im staying overnight... It weighed in at 1650lbs. I debate pullin out the air conditioner hasn't been used once because I dry camp most of the time and can camp in the shade in higher elevations or lattitudes lol.

I am really thinkin about a wind deflector for my roof and see if it improves my 14 to 15 mpg while towing. It is definatly not aerodynamic lol. The next one the door is on the back side, no overhang on the tongue side... might help a bit.
