My First Build

Postby MikeyLikesIt » Sun Mar 18, 2012 3:20 pm

Here's my progress so far.

I started with an old Rockwood Popup.

Stripped it down.

And started modifications.

Here is how it looks after changing the width to 5'. Adding a spacer between the frame and axle to raise it a few inches. And a fresh coat of paint.

Packed up and ready to go home.

I am getting ready to build the floor. It will be a 1"x2", plywood sandwich with 1 1/2" insulation. Right now the tires set level with the top of the frame. I will most likey swap the 8" wheels/tires for 12" ones. Which would bring the tire about 2" above the frame. I think the fenders will have to be integrated into the wall since they sit a litte on the inside of the frame.

How much clearance do ya'll think I will need for the fenders? The torsion axel seems to be at a low angle with only about an inch or so to go before it would become horizontal. Do these things go past horizontal?

Thanks for looking,

Mikey

Hey fellow Hoosier, looks like you're off to a good start Mikey. What style are you building?

Don't have any experience with the torsion axle as far as expected maximum travel. Do they seem stiff or soft? I allowed 3" from tire to fender, 1. that's the max travel of the axle to frame, and 2. it looked pretty good there. 8)
I agree, the 12" tires would be a better choice too. Good luck with your build

My original plan was to do something similar to the modernaire. BUT, plans have changed and this project is on hold while I restore a 1960 BeeLine canned ham type camper that I got yesterday.

Good deal on the restoration project, should be for some good, uh,... "experience". ;)
Be sure to post pics of your progress of the restore.
