My "Depotless Home". 5/4/13 Rivets and fenders!

Postby Dean in Ct. » Sun Apr 15, 2012 3:59 pm

The name may not stick but I have begun my teardrop build. I am going to try not to use Home Depot as a supplier at all because quite frankly I think they suck. So for now, the "Depotless Home"!
The design is from a Pdf file I saved called Grumman 2 and I can't remember where I found it but if anyone knows please let me know! It is 10' long on a 9' platform. I will be building on a boat trailer, which has a huge tongue (to be trimmed later) and multiple holes for the axle. I will do final axle determination of axle location towards the end.

Thanks, but why doesn't it work for me? I'll try a little different method this time.
Anywhoo... I really hated the fenders so I determined to build my own. Seemed like as good a starting place as any, and I hadn't decided on my profile yet.

When you are in your gallery, there is a link below your picture that is the url you are supposed to paste. Titled oddly enough Image-URL If you click in that box the text is highlighted so you can right click and click copy, or CNTRL-C, and then paste it into your text.

Example: gallery/image.php?album_id=512&image_id=90824

Now you highlight that text in what you are writing, and click the Img button at the top. I always use the submit button to make sure I got it right.
In the above example I did not highlight the text with the location of the image, so no image is going to show.

I may make a lot of mistakes but I'm a good recovery man. I don't know how my storage box/foot well ended up straddling the trailer cross member. Oh well, the deck is now pretty much finished. I will have to notch the sides of the box to fit around it.

Clearly I will have to move the axle aft!

Deck is drying now and tomorrow I will begin cutting the profile panels. I'm going to try the string method for the elipses.

Just had to take a day off from work! I feel like I made some progress.Outer skin is 1/2"MDO. I plan on 1" foam then Luan. Still needs a little more fairing, but I'm pleased. More this weekend, I hope

Starting on cabinetry, making some progress. I've never used a biscuit joiner before. Pretty handy!

Re: My "Depotless Home". Cabinetry, 5/19/12

Just my two cents worth, but I think if I was building on that chassis, I'd leave the tongue long for a few big reasons. First, the long tongue will make backing easier because the trailer will be less flighty in reverse, and respond more smoothly. The longer tongue will allow you to back at sharper angles for more maneuverability, without having to worry about your carefully finished plywood hitting the tow vehicle. You will be able to more clearly see where the trailer is going in reverse because the longer tongue will hold it farther away and out of blind spots. The long tongue can be valuable space allowing room for an impressive tongue box to hold batteries, extra gear, and whatever else. I think I'd have a trash receptacle box on that long tongue as well. Be a responsible camper and pack out your garbage without having it stink up your interior or your car. That tongue is useful space I wouldn't abandon.
Just my opinion though :D The build looks great so far

Thanks for the input, Jeff! Luckily it's not something I will need to worry about for a while. Now if I could just figure out the picture thing again. Damn.
