Newbie Cubbie Build

Postby dshideler » Sun Feb 17, 2013 9:32 pm

Well I guess I've started (contrary to what my wife may think). I'm using the Kuffel Creek Cubby plans on a HF utility trailer frame. How many red trailers can you look at but here it is anyway. I'll be painting it black.

Hello; Welcome to the teardrop club. I, as well as several folks have built Cubby teardrops here on the forum. I deviated from the plans after I got the main body constructed. What is your name and where are you from? I will be following along as you assemble yours. Take a lot of pictures to post on here.

Good luck with your build. ;)

My name is Darren and I'm from southern Ohio. I'm looking forward to getting some work done and hearing everyone's advice and input.

You have conquered the hardest part...learning how to post pictures! Woo-hoo. Keep doing that is advice #1.

Go in to your "User control panel" and modify your "profile" tab if you want to include info on your location in your signature line. This can be very helpful in getting suggestions and help from other people that are familiar with your location (you don't have to give specifics, but just knowing that you are in southern Ohio could be helpful to others who are willing to offer suggestions). Can be a huge help when looking for local building materials or even a helpful hand for those times when you need some help lifting or positioning the big stuff.

In that same tab you can "edit your signature" to include your name or tag line, and most people include a link to their own build thread. That way when you post comments, questions, or suggestions in other threads there is an easy way for people to get to your thread and have a better understanding of where your thoughts are coming from.

Just a couple of suggestions to start.

I looked through your build thread and it is very informational. I think it will help me a lot. If my TD turns out half as good as yours I will be happy.

Well I took advantage of today's beautiful sunny 50 degree weather to do some work on my TD. Yesterday I built the floor frame and attached the plywood floor. I asked the guy at the lumber yard for acx plywood and I didn't realize until I got home that he sold me fire retardand plywood. I hope it doesn't emit fumes. I went ahead and used it anyway. Today I coated the underside of the floor with asphalt roofing coating.

I know everyone said this stuff was nasty but dang I didn't realize it would be this nasty. How long does it take for this goop to dry? I also went ahead and sanded and painted my trailer rustoleum hammered black. I think it turned out pretty good. All of it has two coats with some areas having three.

Now to let all this dry and continue on.

Well, despite the fact that it was only 30 degrees yesterday I was able to get a little done on the TD. I got my side profiles laid out and cut. I laid the first one out and cut it then I clamped the second sheet of plywood to the first one and used a template bit in my new router to cut the second one out. It was the first time Ive used a router and it was a little intimidating. Somehow I ended up taking too deep of a cut on a little section but luckily it was where I had to remove extra material anyway for the hatch seal.

I was also able to get my doors laid out and cut and I got my bulkhead walls built. I used my kregg pocket hole jig for the walls. I love that pocket hole jig.

It's supposed to be in the upper 50's this weekend so hopefully I will get a lot accomplished.

Hello Darren: It looks like you are moving right along there. I used the kreg jig on my build as well. You are doing a great job.
I will be looking over your shoulder as you go along. Keep the pics coming.

Awesome bees! I have a feral colony that's been in a tree in my yard for the last 5 years or so. I tried giving away the queen to a friend who bee keeps, but he never got around to coming over. I wish I could harvest the honey, but I am perfectly content to just watch them.

This is my third year keeping bees and I have 5 hives. It's a very fascinating hobby and very rewarding. Last year was my first to harvest honey and I got 90 pounds!
