Grasshopper inspired ttt

Postby Pat4by » Tue May 14, 2013 5:20 am

Hey All,

This is my first attempt at a build journal so ill see how it goes.
Ive already been building this ttt for about a year on and off, but ive been putting in some hours over the last month so ive got some progress pictures to share.

My design was created on the fly, after spending sometime on this forum trawling through build journals and sketchup designs. I bought a 6mtr length of 20x20x1 galv steel and bent up my side profile. After doing this i decided that it was Grasshopper inspired.

Ill finish this first post with a picture of the frame when i had it mostly welded up.

That's going to be great!
Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.

once i finished welding up the frame, i fitted a 3/4 cd ply floor.

I glued and screwed the floor to the frame then cut my side walls out of 1/8 laminated ply

After i fitted the walls i realised that i should have done the ceiling first, then butt the walls upto the ceiling.
can't learn if i dont make mistakes.

So i forgot to take pictures of the ceiling being put up. I built the frame fitted the floor and walls septemberish last year.
Then about three weeks ago i got excited about it again and fitted the ceiling and end walls.

I guess these pictures give you more of an idea of the shape and size of the ttt.

I used .5 white colourbond (steel) for the back end wall and front end wall (because of the radius corners) and 1/8 laminated ply (white) for the flat centre ceiling section
the walls are kind of a 70's looking finish called flax.
the radius corners are probably a little tight at roughly 100mm (4inches i think)
internal dimensions are roughly 7ft L x 5 1/2ft W x 3 3/4ft H i dont speak imperial so sorry if thats not how you write it

Instead of double doors ive put a window in the drivers side, with provisions in the frame work to make a door if its awkward in the future.
Ive made the door opening 800 x 600mm slightly smaller then the American door units ive seen.

Cheers
Luke

Im no good at wood working so my cabinet and shelf probably look terrible.

In this picture you can also see the 12v led light, it can pivot 180 degrees forwards and backwards. I thought it was pretty cool.
Ive also fitted all the aluminium trims between all the panel joins. I intend on pulling all the aluminium out when everything has been fitted and painting it white to match the walls/ceiling.
front shelf.jpg

This picture shows my overhead shelf in the front. Shelf's about a foot wide.
Ive designed the interior to have maximum space. The head end of the bed is actually at the back, hence the over head cupboard not being so deep.
The reason behind having the bed in a non conventional way is because around christmas time my partner and i found out we were expecting our first child.
So our 2 birth camper will be incorporating a bunk in the front section between the door and the front wall, Roughly 2 1/2ft wide by 5 1/2ft across.

Today i fabbed up my window frame, just need to paint it and glaze it. The frame will be white with tinted glass and flyscreen internally mounted.
You can also see my polystyrene insulation pieces precut and ready to be glued to the back of the interior wall.

Hopefully tomorrow i will start fabbing up my outer and inner door frames.
And still waiting for my fiama roof hatch with dual direction 12v fan to come.

Nice work.

Which country are you in?

It is always neat to see the different materials and techniques that are used in different regions, let alone different builder's ideas.

I will be following along. Hope you can keep the ball rolling!

Hi Kcstudly

Im from Australia.
Not quite as big following of teardrops or ttt down here compared to you guys over there.
My woodworking skills are pretty non existant so i use materials that are more in my comfort zone
Plus im trying to make this thing as light as i can.

There is a lot of interest here in the Aussie way of building trailers. Very rugged and utilitarian. We are always looking for new ideas to make improvements in all aspects of building.

There are several other builds from Oz documented here, including Lukey's Van From Scratch which is currently underway. Have you seen it?

Good luck with your build. Post lots of pictures and always feel free to ask for input. You will get a lot of it; most will be based on hard lessons learned from those with lots of experience. Speaking as a person with lots of fabrication experience, but little recent camping experience, there is a lot to be learned here.
