Smoky Mountain Camper

Postby volster » Sun Aug 04, 2013 11:19 am

Here are some pictures of my starting point. I picked up this 1974 AMF Skamper off of craigslist for $100. I am going to strip it to the frame and start from scratch. I have had thoughts of removing one axle and cutting the frame to make it smaller, I just don't want to pull that much. The tag on the side says it has 5000GVW and two 3350lb axles. Trying to decide on a 18'X7.5' or a 14'X7' trailer.

Spent some time gutting the inside today, this might take a while. There is a lot of neat old trim pieces and so forth that I might be able to reuse. This will not be a fast build, but it will be quality. I am thinking about cutting the frame to be between 14’ and 16’ with a width of 7’. I am also going to see if I can remove an axle without removing the suspension. I will be able to check this when I get to bare frame.

That looks right roomy. Save everything. You can dispose of stuff when you are finished. Unless you want to save it for the next one.

I have been saving stuff, but am running out of room. I did sell the scrap aluminum for $55, so my investment is $45 now (plus time). I am thinking about turning this one into a teardrop/breadloaf or tear-loaf. I am thinking about doing a slide-in teardrop box for my 6'6" X 10" trailer so I can use both the trailer and camper, having a rear door kind of like the airstream basecamp. I am in Maryville, TN in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. I will start new threads for both projects since they have both changed from original conception to what I have on paper now. Thanks for all the help from everyone on here.

I live in Alcoa. Other then that one week a year we should get together. Let me know if you need a hand with your builds. You might want to look at mine if you want one that works as a sleeper or a hauler...
