canvas to foam and 2x2 structure

Postby tsmyth » Sat Jun 08, 2013 7:11 am

I am building a hydrid foamie using the mechanism of the donor popup. The bottom structure has 2x2 bracing for the lifting struts and 2x2 top and bottom and will be filled in with foam board.
My question is : will the canvas show the outline of the structural 2x2s when I titbond the canvas to the sides and can not be hidden by painting ?

TS, if you get the fit really close and prime and sand it shouldn’t show ... much ... The thicker the canvas , the less anything shows ... ;)

If the fit isn't quite right, I'd used some FlexAll or vinyl spackling compound to get things level. It's kinda like mudding drywall. I used fiberglass over the top of some of my "imperfections" and it worked nicely. I used FlexAll for the long seams, I used the vinyl spackle to fill in imperfections in the foam before fiberglassing. Good Luck on the build and let's see the pics :pictures: :pictures:

After some testing with fabric and wood, I have decided to use 5.0 MM outdoor rated underlayment hardwood plywood ,primed and painted for a smooth finish. The pop top mock-up is too heavy and has to be redesigned to be all foam with minimal framing for windows and roof spars.
