awning material

Has anyone made a lightweight awning for their camper? If so what did you use and where did you get the material? I'm thinking tent material ns attack to trailer by way of snaps and tent poles on outboard side but as yet to find where I could buy some about 7'x12'.... also has anyone framed edges of doors with aluminum channel? thinking 2" channel would work perfect for that? Also another question for those who work fiberglass... I wonder how covering 1" foam with glass would work for under bed? if its strong enuf and if it would be lighter?? also thinking, after reading http://www.goldbrand.info/motorcykelhusvagn2.html that I may try a "1/4" ply -2" foam- 1/4" ply" sandwich and cover that with fiberglass and with aluminum rails of 2" square imbedded where springs will bolt on?? Think this would be strong enuf not to flex and be lighter then steel frame with ply bolted on top? My trailer, if I decide to go this route will be 11" long and inside width of 54 inches approx

Another thought I had..... What if toy used a router or table saw and cut a grove on edge of foam, then glued a slat of wood in it? then u would have a tongue n groove construction. Would be easier to align pieces when putting together and maybe a stronger joint? been reading that long thread and just about crosseyed now..... and i'm just half way thur??

Like this? It does make a strong joint. I made some shelves from some scrap pieces like this and it worked well and strong.

Yes, kinda like that... I was thinking maybe 1/4" groove about 1" deep in each piece then glueing a 2" piece in then butting the 2 pieces together when building. I'm really studying the fiberglass sandwiched 1" foam for strength to substitute for plywood decking under the mattress.... Building the goldbrand trailer, looking for all the weight savings I can find

For the bed use a camping cot maybe, like one of these.

Could remove the legs and put storage drawers/shelves whatever under it.

I had an awning made for me (about 8ft by 8 ft). It is made with sunbrella material which is designed for outdoor use. You should be able to find that in the length you need. I attached mine to the side of the trailer with these mounting studs http://www.sailrite.com/Common-Sense-Cl ... Screw-Stud. There are grommets in the edge of the fabric and the studs are permanently mounted to my trailer. At the end, I use a couple of telescoping metal tent poles that are made by Coleman. I bought mine on line direct from Coleman but I recently saw it at WalMart Works nicely and the fabric is not very heavy but it is good quality and durable. Hope that helps

It seems cheap enuf for awning material and light also. just mainly making sure something was available to use before I get to that point and couldn't find it anywhere....
