Weekender foamie

Just joined! So much to read...anyways, I was thinking of building a weekender foamie.

Here are my reasons for a Weekender foamie:
- To be able to remove from trailer so that it could double as a utility trailer easily as needed.
- Light to tow (I have a Kia Soul)
- I am in canada, so maybe I could do winter camping as well

I am thinking of glassing it for durability, not sure canvas is solid enough against branch puncturations (sp?) etc. I am thinking of the 2" blue foam.

Has anyone built a Weekender as a foamie? Or have any input to any of these ideas?

I have never built a weekender, or a foamie, so I can't help you there. But I would like to welcome you to the forum and wish you the best of luck with your project. You'll find plenty of help, ideas, information and inspiration here. Just ask!!

And remember to post lots of pics. We love them and we all learn from them.

Welcome to the forum.

The weekender should lend itself well to the foamie process. You need to get into the monster foamie thread and read... I think you'll find that canvas is plenty... I think you'll also find that most fiberglass resins will melt the foam...

I'm pretty sure you will find the canvas durable enough but I fiberglassed mine. I used 6 oz glass and epoxy resin and it's fine. No melting issues, but using polyester resin WILL cause the foam to melt. Welcome to the world of Foamies. We're a nice bunch so ask away. A lot of material is covered in the LOOONG thread but it is worth digging into. If you can't find what you're looking for, feel free to ask

I did an experiment with the pink foam and epoxy resin in this thread

and it worked very well and made a strong puncture resistant coating.

Le, our little Foamie was “close “ to the Weekender design ... just seemed like the best design for us at the time ... very Easy to do ... all straight cuts ... no bending ...

GPW, what size is the trailer that you used for Le?

DJ, standard 4’ X 4’ X 8' ... Really easy , with straight lines , standard size sheets ... design obviously influenced by the Weekender..

LWW, we guesstimated by adding the advertised trailer weigh and the cabin , which even I could pick up on either end pretty easy with one hand ... somewhere ~ 400-450lbs. ... could be less.. as I can easily roll it around by hand on my gravel driveway all by myself ... tows like nothing there.. Little bigger shouldn’t be much heavier , the main weight was the HF trailer itself ...

No galley hatch makes it all Much Simpler , less place for leaks too ... Mine’s always dry as toast inside , despite our Rainy weather... No Galley hatch ...
