how much to overlap fabric/canvass

Postby loaderman » Mon Nov 19, 2012 1:50 am

In reading some of the big thread I liked the idea of using scraps/remnants of fabric.
How much overlap should there be on the pieces?

Had thought of doing a shingle sort of design. starting at the bottom and working up.

The more you overlap , the Stronger the overall fabric skin ... ;) Thicker Is stronger...

Eagle , I used around that much overlap too , feels very Safe , cause’ the canvas sticks to canvas like Crazy , and the doubled material acts like a “reinforcing strip “... on my edges was the overlap + the fiberglass tape which makes Three layers , and has proven to be super Strong ... not a hint of a problem after all this time outside ...

and the best thing about it is that once those seams of the foam to foam are covered, glued and painted, NO water is getting in there! :D

so if doing the quilt/pieces idea 16" strips or squares only give you about 12" of coverage.
Good to know. Thanks

I'd say that as you overlap quilt pieces for the sides and top probably an inch or so overlap is good but as you get to the corners I would go about 3 or 4 inches. That overlap makes it quite strong and very water tight!

I suppose if you use strips instead of full sheets you would start at the bottom and work your way up the side of the trailer.
sorta like adding siding to a house.
I wonder if you laid them in a criss-cross pattern how it would look or maybe a herringbone pattern?
but simple works too.

Pete One “could” always weave the strips together for a “basket” effect ... Wonder if you could do that with a fiberglass tape (and a lot of patience) ... Would be STRONG huh !!! :o everything overlapping everything else ...

i see a problem with that however, and that would be how to get the bottom layers glues down. the only way i see to do a basket effect would be to make it first, then glue down as a solid piece. but anyways, that is way too much work for me. :wine:

strips or squares i would paint the area, apply piece paint over including next piece underneath area, and carry on.

If weaving or criss crossing how would you be sure to not have dry pots between the fabric? It would be strong.

Just guessing you’d have to “saturate” the area with the adhesive , which for now the Gripper seems the Best ... available , affordable and it’s been tested ... Too much work for me too ... just sayin’ :NC
