That's an interesting hammer test. It far as puncture strength I'd say it's a wash. Pretty much the same damage.

What exactly is this black goo you folks are refering to and using?

An alternative to the roofing cement is the water based asphalt paint from TSC. It is easy to use, super fast drying, and cheap. I do not know how long it will hold up but I'll let you know. It is made for fence posts.

Warning Rant mode on

I believe that the main reason we use "black goo" is cause it makes the bottoms of our trailers look somewhat like a manufactured unit. After I thought about it a bunch I have decided I will not use black goo on my next one. I will use a 50/50 mix of spare variish/mineral spirits. at least 2 coats of that and then 2 or so coats of full strength spar varnish.

Some place in the Thrifty foamie thread is a page or two when we discussed this. I can't find it right now. But I like the idea of the varnish as it will flow and seep into cracks and crevices. Black goo won't move at all and the if the goo falls or is worn off or cracks you have unprotected wood. With the 50/50 mix the top layers of wood will be very well protected. Also as it is out of direct sun light should never need reapplied.

Rant mode off

Good Idea Wolf !!! Never thought of it that way ... Thinking since I already have the sealer mix and the Goo , may just seal the wood first , then the Nasty stuff... Gotta' use up what I have before it goes off...

I think I'm going to paint/seal the floor then use the rubberized asphalt undercoating. Last couple of trailers have had the same, and have weathered well over many km.

Regarding painting vs fiberglassing the canvas for a smooth look - check out www.wcha.org for ideas and techniques used by people restoring old or building new wood and canvas canoes. Properly done, a wood and canvas canoe will have a smooth, shiny, waterproof finish.

Rvan , Thanks !!! Hard to argue with the plethora of canvas skinned canoes so successfully made/used in the past ...

Wonder what happened to the 10 min video ???

But I don't think I can wait four weeks for the filler to dry before paint  :? :?

Well, I ordered the canvas today. I went to rosebrand.com and got the 72" 7oz canvas in 72" wide. I ordered 40 yards of the stuff. That'll allow me to put on:

1 layer on each inside wall
2 layers on each outside wall
2 layers on the top
a separate piece to do the door

All for just a hair over $200.

I'm looking forward to changing the title on this thread from evil black goo to "Canvas finally"!!!
