RE: Revisit An Earlier Glue/Coating Possibility

Has anyone tried any of this co's products? I just came across it again
recently - it was first mentioned back in May 2011 I believe [now in a sticky].

http://hotwirefoamfactory.com/Foam-Coat-Glue-Foam/

They claim their foam glue is the best available.

The coating can be made flexible [rubbery] or rock hard per their info.
Pg 3 shows a heavy mesh [item #025MH] that can be wrapped around
the foam and coated over for coating reinforcement [sounds familiar eh?].

Just wanted to throw it back out there again.

Cheers,

This may have been covered before BUT..... if strength of foam joints is at question why not use a base layer of fiberglass window screen mesh under your final canvas lamination?

That stuff is TOUGH and sort of a throwback to fiberglass mesh sans the epoxy.

Norm, that glue being a water based product ., I can’t see how it would be good bonding two pieces together (assembly) ... Maybe great bonding things to the foam , but the GG does a fine job and at better price ... and does not depend on evaporation to cure ...
And using that glue would demand close fitting parts , whereas GG fills in little “discrepanciesâ€

I used the hotwire glue for most of my boat. I really liked it. When I ran out I switched to the GG. It was not as messy as the GG. Someone did some destruction tests with it awhile back and had good results. There were some nice photos of the tests. If I remember correctly they said it was the only glue that tore the foam before the glue broke.

Dick Clark? How much glue do they use to keep him together?

And what kind? we might be able to use it.

I bought some and trialed it. It does an excellent job of gluing foam to foam, both face gluing pieces and edge to edge bonding. After gluing and curing, I tried to separate the pieces. I never could separate the face glued pieces and when I separated the edge glued pieces it was the foam that failed, not the glue. It would have been my glue of choice if I did not already have epoxy sitting around from a previous project. If I had to buy glue, that's what I would use. Depending on what I decide on as a canvas filler, I may still use that to glue down the canvas. I've also been messing around with fiberglass and window screen mesh. Not there yet and still have time to decide before my build reaches that point. I also messed with their foam coat and similar products but for a project this size, it would be too costly IMO

Hi Mike n Mel n GPW,

I posted a reply in
:
http://tnttt.com/viewto ... 592#896592

as well concerning this.

I'm sure maybe more searching on the HWFF web site is needed, but they
have the Foam Coat in a 25# size powder that can cover up to 300 SqFt
{ e.g.Think: [(6x10x3)=180] + [(6x6x2) = 72] = 252 SqFt for a
6Wx10Lx6H TTT body's surface.} when reconstituted and at/for a price of
$29.95. That seems quite reasonable I think - tho I admit to not really
comparing it to the prices of gallons of TBII&III and GG.

I wonder if the foam product manufacturers would ultimately be the best?
It is made specifically for foam. It seems that way. What we need to do
is maybe inquire of them just how UV resistant and long lived the Foam
Coat and Styroplast is.

So:

I just joined the HWFF website and sent them an email/inquiry regarding
the strength, durability, UV resistance, and longevity characteristics of
the Foam Coat and Styroplast products. I'll relay their reply after I get
it. Hopefully it will be positive news.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

Maybe the question should be, does truck liner become a skin? Is it stronger than canvas?

But no, that was not what I was thinking...

If we used the mesh and then the coating would that make shapes easier to cover, I wonder? Still leaning toward the foam, TB, Canvas or muslin covering myself. Not there yet. :)
