How about a simple siren warbling horn type of thing ? ... here’s one from Wally world , looks like it does everything but cook your pancakes ... :o http://www.walmart.com/ip/PremierTek-CA ... m/15913522 Just as an example ... Simple alarm/horn /siren on a switch might do ... much thriftier .... That or dig out grandpa’s old saxophone ... that’s enough to scare away most anything ... :frightened: On second thought ... that may actually attract bears eh ...

Ps. Apologies to the MILs ..... :R

Sounds to me like some bowels of ammonia placed around the camp and food in the bear boxes would be more effective and pocketbook friendly.

No car alarms on the trucks I take camping. :D

As for bears and loud noises, apparently they don't work consistently. Years ago I had a black bear that visited my camp. The only way I could get it to go was to throw 5" plus rocks at it, and it took a few. It was making a good stab at trying to get at my bear bag.

Being a solo camper, I figure an electric fence for the bears will help allot. It will protect camp a bit better when I'm out exploring, and also allow me to relax a bit more while in camp. As for expense. I'd only need to get some taller posts. I already have the poly electric fence rope, fencer, etc..

In the best American tradition .... How about a Gun !!! I hear Bear is pretty tasty !!! :Flippin Burger: ... and you get a nice warm fur rug for your TD too ... Either you eat the bear , or the bear eats you .... :frightened:

Not to be OT ... again ... these cold winter nights are particularly good for a bit of star gazing (another Thrifty activity) ... new moon tonight (no moon ) so it will be Dark ... Andromeda constellation overhead ... One good look and a star map never ceases to amaze , how BIG this place is , and that’s just the stuff we can see, which is basically nothing ... minuscule in cosmic terms ... We are so tiny , us and our little foamie trailers .... :o

I was cruising the instructables site and came across a trailer made f foam sorta
http://www.instructables.com/id/Creatin ... -aka---cu/
thought I'd share it with all you hope fully it stands up to your expectations and who knows might get an idea or two

If you don't have a car alarm, I'd use a marine air horn to scare off bears and other critters. We had a bear get into our garage one night (I was out on the road on business) when the wife called me in terror at 2:30 in the am to ask what to do, I told her to sound the car alarm. It worked!!! :worship: :worship: :worship: The bear left the garage and plopped himself on our front lawn until law enforcement arrived and scared it off. That 650# bear did a lot of damage in town till winter set in. It apparently has died since it never returned. It had been shot in the head by a homeowner who had a handgun. The shooter said he saw the round hit the bear in the skull and bounce off. (A blood trail proved that the bear did get hit). Wildlife officials think that might have caused an infection which caused him to die. We now have the air horns near all the doors of our house and we keep one in each bedroom. Easy, simple solution that works!!!

these cold winter nights are particularly good for a bit of star gazing

Tonight's the peak of the Geminid meteor shower as well - you should be able to see it from everywhere, given a clear sky.

I'm not gonna weigh in on the bear thing except to say that you can do far more to deter bears by keeping your camp clean than with any tech solution. Cache your food, burn your food waste and keep the galley cleaner than your kitchen at home. Air horns are good (Ecohorns inflate with a bike pump), bear bangers and guns work too.

We had a mom and two cubs in a tree outside our door earlier this year, pretty cool to watch till the RCMP showed up and turned it into a 'crisis' - it's shot with my old phone so the video is lousy, but you can hear one of the cubs:

Bogo WOW it may have been .6 joule. but my whole idea is to convert what I have to one that will work for a portable bear fence. I have all the other stuff (technical word for fence, poles and signs). Just why do you think I have 6 used broken not working fence chargers if I don't have a reason? Horses. and they are as big as a bear( well maybe not quite as big) but just as determined! Hopefully my friend can get enough parts from the "Old" ones to convert it to use as a 12 volt charger. I had my amateur radio license at one time but accidentally let it expire so I do know a little but just not enough. I will let my friend do all the work. :D
My son came by after hunting this AM and did a few little things for me Yea!!!! With everything else I have to do before My big west trip he said he would help me get things done around here. Now I am wondering. He volunteered to help me get the foam for my build, ( he has a truck). I am very excited!!!
I am still trying to think of a name for my TD . My son (the fireman) is looking for some old firehose for my build. He is so more understanding since I explained my crazy to him and he thinks i should build a 5x8 now. Hey it is just nice to have him on board!!!! :) Oh yea, I don't have thingy on my keys. My car is 20 years old. I will also take an air horn they are cheap but won't do any good for me unless I am awake) I sleep very deep and can sleep through a tornado.
I will be watching the sky tonight!!!
