Silly Foamie Ideas

Apparently I have way too much time on my hands; but after reading GPW's comment on using 500 pounds of beer for ballast while towing a light weight foamie, I just had to come up with something.

I'm thinking it may be too much flat frontal surface for the foam to withstand the force of wind; but I'm sure if somebody put their mind to it, it could be re-enforced to make it work. My initial thought was running spars the length of the trailer (pinned in place with dowels) to tie every thing together.




The window frame was just a bit of additional whimsy. Figured it could be carved out of foam and glued in place over a stationary window.

Any body got any other off the wall ideas they want to share?

That is sweet! Maybe a wine bottle shape to give it a pointy front end for aerodynamics. :-)

You might even convince one of the beer companies to pay for a nice vinyl wrap for advertising!

Like I said in the OP, the design was just basically having too much time on my hands and a "tongue in cheek" response to beer ballast. The more I look at it though, the more it grows on me. Darn!!! Just when I thought I had my mind made up on a design to build, I start thinking outside the box. The possibilities of using foam instead of wood sure open up a lot of things that would be difficult/impossible in wood.

If I do this, it would have to be in a brand that I partake. Do bears drink O'Douls???

Hi tinksdad,

I think you ought to build it! You'd get at least twice the "lookers"
that a more traditional TD gets I bet.

A couple of variations/suggestions for consideration:

1 - If you didn't want to do a "beer can", make it a "55 gallon drum".

2 - If you move the door to the rear,you could 'aero' the front with
a rounded front, but even better, you could put in a drop floor
that could allow you to make it a garagable [<7ft high] TTT.

Also a name suggestion - "Totally Tubular". It'd be a Totally Tubular TTT!

'Tis nae an affliction! 'Tis freedom! Nice pic, BTW - it takes a brave man indeed to stand on something that tall in a kilt. One sudden gust, and children could be scarred for life...

I think that parnold is absolutely right - you might just talk a local distributor into sponsoring the build by paying for a vinyl wrap. Heck, even O'Doul's needs to advertise.

Dad, you know the beauty of your design , is it fits on a narrow trailer , without modification or complex floor framing, yet you have a wide sleeping area ... that's a neat trick in itself ... the more look at this the more I really like the idea... The tubular shape makes it so strong .. Too Cool !!!

Thanks for the compliments. Since I got hooked on this Foamie idea, I've played with a lot of designs trying to come up with something that will suit my needs (which are simple) and the needs of "she who camps with me". What I will actually end up with, I don't have a clue yet. I also have a little vardo drawn up on the same trailer frame and a hard sided version of the conestoga trailer from up in the vintage plans. I'm leaving for work in a few minutes and heading to New Orleans tomorrow morning to go see the new grandbabies. I won't be near my computer until Sunday night or Monday morning. I'll post some more pictures of other ideas I played with in this thread when I get back.

And just to make it clear, 'pants' in Britain are underwear, an abbreviation of underpants - 'trousers' are what is worn over your pants.

I see that in Greenock (not the beautiful end of Scotland), holding your wedding reception in a "Temperance Hall" is no reason not to get drunk.
