Ceiling Storage Ideas?

Postby RioWilson » Sun Mar 31, 2013 4:59 pm

I realized on our last trip that there is a lot of storage space just begging to be used in the ceiling of our teardrop. There is literally at least 8 inches of headroom even when I am sitting up. I had a few ideas for how to take advantage of that space, most of which involved mesh pockets. Anyone else done this? I was thinking it would be great for extra clothes, especially in spring and fall when temps can vary wildly. Your thoughts are welcome...

you could use pegboard with elastic cord looped through it like the ceiling of a Snap-on truck or maybe a cargo net.

On the current build, I've got a lot of room over the bed. Since it's a standy, a lot of them used to have a small bed that would fold up there, but I'm not going to do that. I"m thinking of maybe a 16" deep shelf stretching from side to side with a 1/4" ply bottom. No doors on it. But cover up the front opening with a curtain. I could do doors down the road, but right now, the whole thing is kinda taking a back burner till I get this build complete. Would work well for clothes, extra bedding, just non heavy stuff. Doug

Mine is a little different. On the slouch end of my half-standy, over the bed area, I installed some rubber-like door stops. On one side, a 3/4" piece of the inner circle has been removed at the top so that each pair of door stops work similar to clothes rod holders. Then, I inserted a couple 3/4" diameter wood dowels. I use these to hold the bed's lower leg boards and cushions during the day; but, I also store things up there. It would be easy to attach some cloth across the dowels to use like a hammock-type of shelf and there should be no pain even if someone's head hit it. I have been so happy with my easy removable storage supports that I have thought of adding some to the higher front portion of the ceiling; but, haven't had enough need to do that yet. Here's a picture:

Not pretty, but cheap and efficient, I use three plastic crates hinged to the bulkhead at the foot of the bed, secured with bolt latches. When open for access (see the one on left) still allow 12 inches clearance for feet.

My daughter has a pop-up and uses the cloth divided closet storage bags hung horizontally from the roof over the sink and bed areas. She uses them for bedding, clothes and light food such a bread, cereal, chips, etc.

This is just and example - she found some that had a full zippered front. They fold flat when not in use or can be carried full in the tow vehicle.

Hang a bungee cargo net from the ceiling, you could put shoes, jackets and other light objects up there without too much trouble, probably just four hooks. Since its bungee, instead of cord, you can expand a hole to get larger objects through it without unhooking the net from the ceiling. A quality net will have a solid cord around the perimeter, with a lock mechanism to set the length of the cord. Hook the cord on all four corners, add stuff, draw cord tight and lock at that length. If you need something really big that won't fit through the netting, you just loosen the cord and the net will become slack and droop so you can access the contents.
