How NOT to build...

Postby trccc » Thu Apr 04, 2013 11:01 am

Sorry gang, but I need to share this. On another forum there is a long thread about a guy building a shed. While it is good for entertainment value, please do NOT mimic any of the construction techniques in your build...

I'm calling you out trccc..... anyone here would have been happy to offer advice during construction. You don't have to play this off as someone else's work.

Some people are not blessed with building skills. At least he has accomplished what he started out to do build, a building (looks like with what he had. ) Some people just talk about it and never accomplish it. So I applaud the work .

I'll bet he was asked to build a place for his mother in law to stay in when she visits.

Brings to mind a "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" type comment-- "We don't need no stinkin' building permits"! Sure, it resembles a shed, but what's gonna happen when the first big wind storm, or heavy snow load (if you're in that area), comes calling? So I take it the local building inspector doesn't get out of the office much :R

Uh...

Untreated lumber sitting flat on the ground?

Three years. Four tops.

That is what I am afraid a teardrop might look like I built one.

As a retired union carpenter, I am almost speechless. He didn't build it with "what he had", that's all brand new lumber. All those drywall screws, in shear, almost guarantees major failure long before the untreated floor joists rot away. He, obviously doesn't own a level or a tape measure. Just awful

Being an old time construction superintendent for 45 years, I cant resist making a correction and rejection punch list on this dump:

1. 2x4 floor joists laid on dirt and grass and at 2 ft centers.
2. wall studs at floor and roof line, attached to sides of top and bottom plates, secured with only dry wall screws.
3. 2x4 roof ridge members laid flat and lap over each other.
4. ridge supported by 2x4 interior posts attached to sides of floor joists.
5. unsupported roof plywood at eave, laid on 2x4 cross members, that are too short.
6. exterior plywood siding but jointed at horizontal and vertical joints, and will leak when it rains.
7. don't even expect to present the office with a bill for labor and materials, you will definately not be paid.

Row, as in rowboat, and Lee, as in the side away from the wind........Roly ~~ ;) :?

February 20, 1979 was the darkest day in the History of the building industry in this country.

Beginning this day all the Professionals knew nothing...and the amateurs knew everything.

It is a day when the corporate officials of Home Depot, Lowes, Wicks etc. dance around with "Gitty abandonment" Like school children on a Playground. :dancing :dancing
While we the professionals wear Black armbands. :(

It was the first day that Bob Villa went on TV.

And so it began. :frightened:

I remember the first episode I saw; Norm was explaining to Bob how the roof rafters were infested with termites. To which Bob replied....Maybe some Track Lighting will help!! :?

Happy Trails
